Lincoln's relatively cheap electric rates come at a cost: the coal that produces much of our power creates a lot of carbon emissions. If Congress ever decides to tax carbon emissions, wave buh-bye to those cheap rates.
Actually, I'm just using this post as yet another of my attempts to promote nuclear power. It's clean. It's safe. It's cheap. Learn more.

See what your friends and neighbors have to say about this.
As greenhouse gases continue to increase, the viability of nuclear energy as a clean alternative is more and more attractive.
I have to admit that I am leaning toward nuclear energy more, as long as regulations of the industry continues to be strict and as long as environmental concerns are considered in construction and operation.
I don’t think nuclear energy is the way to go. Yes it’s cleaner, but there are a couple of major problems.
Most obvious is the potential for major disaster, whether it be a meltdown from within or a terror strike from the outside (our government currently has a rather poor record of securing some nuclear power facilities).
Also, we have not come up with a viable solution about how to store the nuclear waste we already have, let alone what we’ll produce in the future. The current Yucca Mountain storage project in Nevada has been beset by complications and setbacks.
Instead, we should focus on dramatically reducing consumption and on developing not only clean, but safe technologies.
Good points MSC. They really do need to resolve the waste storage (or lack thereof) issue before building more nuclear plants. The safety concerns are immense and security is more and more an issue. I would think locating new nuclear power plants on or near military bases would be an option to consider because securing them ought to be of utmost concern.
I would like to think that we could reduce consumption as a nation, but nothing indicates our society has a desire to do so right now.
I think we should just build all the nuclear power plants we need in Canada, and then store all the waste in Canada as well. Then, if there’s a disaster—hey, it’s just Canada. There will still be plenty of it (Canada) to go around!
