Where in Lincoln is this?

It was the brand new Hy-Vee on 50th and O street, which just opened last Tuesday. Complete with another branch of Caribou Coffee, and their well-known deli, salad bar, Italian, and Chinese express stations, this new Hy-Vee is easily their best store in town and arguably the best grocery store in Lincoln now. Sure it’s no Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s, but it’s a clear step up for Lincoln.
I was there early on Sunday morning and the place was packed. They even had a breakfast buffet and a guy at an omelette station, which I haven’t seen in any of the Lincoln grocery stores before.

New Hy Vee on 50th and O?
The old Blockbuster and the huge amound of pumpkins were the giveaway for me. I only live about 5 blocks from there and was in the store last Thursday.
I’m strange in that grocery stores are my favorite places on earth. This replaces my OLD neighborhood grocery store, which had been the Hy-Vee at 70th & O, so I am more than just a casual observer.
I was there Friday night and ate dinner with my wife and child for $13 before getting groceries. Cheap Chinese - and not too bad. No worse than what I usually pay $30 for from local Chinese places, just smaller and more appropriate servings. We decided that (as lame as this sounds) this dinner/groceries trip could become a regular Friday night event, with all the choices and pretty low prices. Apparently I am old and lame.
I also ran in there Sunday afternoon. Despite the big crowds, we were in and out again in seconds. We’ll see if they have this many checkout lines open a month from now.
The deli sections are larger, and have more items on display, but most of the things were also available at the old store if you asked for them. Of course there are some nice additions - a cheese cooler and olive bar, larger seafood area and such. People seem to like the attached liquor store, but that’s no big thing for me.
One of my favorite things about the new Hy-Vee is that they use NORMAL shopping carts! I hate the weird square carts that the old Hy-Vee used. Also, my daughter loves the child sized carts. What a great way to occupy smaller shoppers.
I’m going to like this place a lot in a few weeks when the crowds thin out some. The claustrophobic in me had a hard time enjoying the grocery part of the trip.
It’s nice to see the familiar faces from the 70th/O Hy-Vee at the new location, but my worry now is what will fill that space.
You are not alone my friend. I, too, get a kick out of browsing grocery stores and markets. I didn’t get a chance to check out the bakery, but I will next time I go there. I did notice a few “new” seafood items possibly worth trying, but it still can’t compare to the Whole Foods in Omaha. Its still a good step in the right direction however.
Being right next to the Barnes and Noble, and within the same vicinity as Best Buy and Target, make it a great shopping destination.
I wonder what will happen to the 70th and O location as well.
