Whatchu Talkin’ ‘Bout, Don?

By: Mr. Wilson on August 4, 2008
In today's Don Walton column, he includes this sentence near the end:
Irony: Deregulation is a favorite theme of the business community, but deregulation of the airline industry could forever place limits on Lincoln’s potential for economic growth.
I'm missing his point. Could somebody tell me what he's trying to get at?

I would think that he means deregulation could eliminate most or all of the few flights that still come in or out of here. With little to no air service, it would be hard to draw new large companies to Lincoln. That would be my guess.

I was pleased to see no stupid baseball references at the end of his column. Again, who cares?

Is industry regulation what keeps the few flights we have from leaving? True or not, I don’t think I’ve heard that before.

He may be mistakenly referring to the Essential Air Service act - an outgrowth of the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978.  The EAS provides subsidies to airlines in exchange for their providing service to smaller cities.  But Lincoln is not on the list of cities.

Nebraska cites are:  Alliance, Chadron, Grand Island, Kearney, McCook, North Platte and Scottsbluff.

With over 250,000 people and a large university, it’s unlikely the Lincoln would ever lose all air service.

I have no idea. It was only my guess. If that’s not it, I’d have no earthly idea what he’s talking about. Of course, with his columns, that’s not unusual.

Could it be ... Don Walton is a dolt and never makes sense?
