It's difficult for me to comprehend, but apparently many Lincolnites just don't understand this whole "mandatory water restriction" thing. As a result, LPD is ticketing violators to the tune of over 100 tickets yesterday alone. That's a pretty ridiculous number. It means that even after eleven days of warnings there are still clueless property owners out there. And worse, it means a heap of local cops are stuck knocking on doors to save a few gallons of water rather than, say, working on one of the city's three summer murders.
For those of you who need help remembering, here are the rules:
- Properties with street addresses ending in even numbers (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8) must limit outdoor water use to Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
- Properties with street addresses ending in odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7 and 9) must limit outdoor water use to Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
- No watering is allowed on Mondays, except for designated uses.
- Property owners with more than one street address at the same location can choose either schedule and must notify the Lincoln Water System (LWS) of their decision.
Today is Tuesday. That means odd number addresses may water today. Even number addresses may NOT water today. It's that easy.
Remember how last year we were talking about massive flooding along the Missouri River? Water is a funny thing, isn't it?

See what your friends and neighbors have to say about this.
It kind of boggles my mind. I don’t get the excuse that people don’t pay attention to the news. To not know, you’d have to:
* not subscribe or read the LJS online (I can see that)
* not watch Channel 8 or 10/11 News
* not listen to any Lincoln radio station
* not see any of the lighted signs placed around the city (some days, my vehicle doesn’t leave the garage, yet I’ve seen at least 3 of them)
* not talk to or overhear anyone at work or a restaurant or anywhere else talking about this
* not be on Twitter
I can see some of those things, but who meets all of those criteria?
I haven’t reported anyone. But my small street has at least 2, if not 3 violators. I saw 3-4 while walking the kids to school today, and at least that many yesterday (it’s about a 3/4 mile walk).
Crazy.
A chunk of those were in my neighborhood where the watering is controlled by the neighborhood association. A few days after the restrictions started, I sent an email to an association rep saying that my lawn seemed more green than seemed reasonable and would they double-check the sprinkler settings. I was informed that the restrictions were being followed and no one was going to get any tickets. I guess they were mistaken! Yesterday everyone in the neighborhood was sent an email saying that the sprinkler system issue would be corrected and asking us to bring the tickets to neighborhood association reps.
Ha! That’s fantastic. I didn’t realize there was such a thing as a neighborhood association-controlled sprinkler system. I’m sure the reps received some angry phone calls yesterday.
