See what your friends and neighbors have to say about this.
I’ve been to Topeka but it’s a full fledged race course. Not flat like our airport setting will be.
But if you’re into cool cars, go.
This is great. Sure NASCAR is popular, but you’ve never seen racing until you’ve been to an SCCA event. Think of NASCAR like Major League Baseball, players that are in it for the money. Well SCCA is equal to the Northern League(Saltdogs), players that are in it for the love of the game, not the money. Although this will bring in some big bucks for the city.
Solo is the “brand name” of SCCA Autocrossing. The events take place on large parking lots or airport runways where each car runs a temporary course set up with traffinc pylons. Fastest time thru the course wins. Cars are classed by power and modifications. Yes, you can run your daily driven car if you want and many National competitors do. (no tippy truck/vans/etc…) Many people also have purpose built cars that have many thousands of dollars put into them. The SCCA Solo Nationals did not take place on the race track at Heartland Park Topeka, but on the paddock area… and they out grew the site. Previously to Heartland Park, the Solo Nationals were held at a similar site as the Lincoln Airpark at Forbes Field in Topeka and earlier at the Salina, KS airport.
The SCCA does put on wheel to wheel racing events as well. If you are interested in those events, they are held just over an hour West of Lincoln at Motorsports Park Hastings or just over the border into Iowa at Midamerica Motorplex as well as at Topeka, St.Louis, and beyond.
The local SCCA club puts on about a dozen Solo events a year, a half dozen RallyX events, and three or four weekends of wheel to wheel racing.
For more information you can check out the national SCCA website at http://www.scca.com or the local club, the Nebraska Region SCCA, at http://www.nrscca.com We’d love to have you join us in the fun!
Thanks, Jan!
