The Man They Call Scalito

By: Mr. Wilson on November 1, 2005
Some groups are up in arms over the references to Judge Samuel Alito as "Scalito." I don't get it. What's so offensive about Scalito?

It’s an attempt to make the Democrats look anti-Italian and anti-Catholic.  No one mentions the name Scalito was bestowed upon the judge in 1992 in a law review article.

On C-SPAN yesterday there was some footage of Leahy talking to Alito when he was making rounds on Capitol Hill, and Leahy was asking questions like “Do you speak Italian?” and asking about Alito’s parents so on. Although it was clearly meant to be conversational and not malicious, it did strike me as being at least a little clumsy - at worst simply rude - to ask questions of someone you don’t really know like that in front of TV cameras and about 2 dozen photographers and journalists. Was Roberts asked similar questions?
