Pork Barrel Politics in K-Town

By: Mr. Wilson on March 3, 2005
Third District Representative Tom Osborne is trying to secure $8 million in pork to fund a new interchange near the Archway Monument just outside of Kearney. With all the funding needs in Nebraska -- you know, little things like schools, health care, that sort of thing -- aren't you glad to know that your state's representatives are working so hard to get a gaudy tourist trap off life support?

There is no question that the place was badly planned to begin with without direct access from I-80. Yes, I find it sadly funny how now our congressional reps have to waste political capital and time getting money to correct an obviously poorly planned tourist attraction. But at this point, what other option is there?

...what other option is there?

That’s easy: don’t waste $8 million on an interchange designed primarily to direct traffic to a tourist trap. Let it live or die on its own rather than throwing a continuous stream of taxpayer dollars at it.

The most desirable option, in my mind, is to never have built it in the first place. Too late for that, of course. It was clear from the start that the thing was set up to fail. They predicted 1 million visitors each year. HA! The only people stupid enough to believe that could happen were the people so wrapped up in the project they couldn’t for a moment believe it might be nothing more than a lukewarm idea. The actual annual visitor numbers are around 150,000, 1/7 the total hyped to Nebraskans. Being off by a factor of 7 on a quasi-public project is not only disgusting and irresponsible, it’s practically criminal.
