Planning Ahead

The original study, done in 2001, is long outdated. And the latest traffic counts have changed the road design. Six lanes likely will be needed eventually, so plans would include a wide center median to be available when that time comes. The original plan didn't account for eventual expansion to six lanes? That's mind-blowing and entirely inexcusable.

See what your friends and neighbors have to say about this.
Since we moved to the south side of town and have to go across 56th and Hwy 2 on a regular basis I have this to say.
When your light turns green, wait 5 seconds before you move. Heck, wait 10 seconds.
I have stopped counting how many semis I have witnessed go through a very red light at high speeds. Its scary. I’m surprised we do not have more fatalities to be honest.
And with that sad, I think we have done the trucking industry a great disservice for not making the south beltway a priority. I can not imagine the hassle it is for them to make the trip on heavily commuted roads that they really have no business being on due to the overall growth of Lincoln.
There’s no excuse for putting other drivers (or pedestrians) at risk, but boy those truck drivers must get frustrated driving on Highway 2. There’s the 87th/84th one-two punch; Old Cheney and 56th; the backups at 27th; and the ridiculously short lights at 14th. (I once timed the green at 14th & Highway 2 at 12 seconds. 12 seconds! You can barely get a heavily-loaded semi moving in 12 seconds, much less a whole line of them.)
To be fair, too, to the trucking industry, it’s not just the trucks that run red lights along Hwy. 2. My wife and I always remind each other to hesitate and double check before crossing Hwy. 2. My daughter is almost 5. I hope that by the time she’s driving, earth might be moving along the south beltway. Regardless, we will be drilling the hesitate-on-highway 2 message into her pretty little skull. Maybe by the time my 2-year-old can drive ...
I hesitate anywhere I go now. We have lived elsewhere in the US, and Lincoln has some of the worse offenders for running red lights. I saw better behaved drivers in New York City than here!
