Say goodbye to your West O friends. After November 12, you may not see them for a year.
I won't be surprised if we lose a business or two during the construction. I suppose it's inevitable, especially if the business is already having a rough time. At least this project has been in the planning stages for three years, so folks have had time to prepare.
Do you ever go to West O? I know I don't. West O is a huge turn-off for me. The word "bugly" was coined to describe things like West O. It ranks up there with parts of Cornhusker Highway on the list of Lincoln's ugliest roadways. If there were more ways to access that part of town I have no doubt the problem would take care of itself in no time. At least there's Capitol Beach and some other nice neighborhoods once you get off the main road.
A question for those of you who live in or frequent the area: What businesses should Lincolnites be sure to help support during the construction period? Any favorites that may have an especially hard time getting by?

See what your friends and neighbors have to say about this.
I drove over the viaduct and down West O last night, and it didn’t dawn on me that it would be the last time on the overpass, or that I won’t head down that road, most likely, for a year or more. I do think the new overpass will be a huge improvement.
I live a few furlongs from the overpass, yet hardly ever use it unless there is a train. I am basically in its shadows so I just use the side roads to traverse to west O. We really only go west for auto parts or food.
Lucky for me my street does not cross D st so I will not see any increase in traffic while this is going on.
I used it a lot when I lived on the west side of town. Still use it quite a bit.
Be sure to support:
* The Red Fox (excellent food!)
* Mary’s Place (support live music)
* Merle’s in Emerald (excellent food!)
* Cheap gas along West O (probably will get cheaper)
* Only been there once, but The Restaurant had good food. The detour might be the best thing to happen to that cursed restaurant location.
West O? Where’s that? I didn’t know that O St went west. Doesn’t it end at 9th St?
I kid…I also don’t go there.
I only go that way to go to Swing Nights at the Pla Mor Ballroom. I guess I should look for an alternate route- the next one is this Thursday…
Also, west O is the home of the original drive through De Leon’s. I’m sure they will be OK.
I’ve heard good things about The Red Fox and The Restaurant and plan to hit both eventually. I’m playing a show at Box Awesome (right under the bridge) the day before it closes.
