What's this? Williamsburg Village (40th and Old Cheney) is getting a new building? A new $14 million Veterans Affairs Regional Office will begin construction in June. That's great news, tempered by the fact the project probably costs taxpayers much more than it should thanks to it being located in Williamsburg Village.
What's the deal with Williamsburg? I'm always surprised how many vacant lots remain in the development. I can't help but think that the project missed several opportunities to be much niftier than it has turned out to be. Or maybe this slow growth -- going on, what, 20 years now? -- is intentional.
In other Williamsburg "news", I like the rumor that the Hy-Vee is planning an expansion. That's "our" Hy-Vee so I'm always on the lookout for improvements.

If I recall, I do think the original plan called for about 15 years of development. It’s easily surpassed that. Of course when it began, maybe nobody could really foresee that 27th and Pine Lake Road would turn out the way it did with all the commerce aside from SouthPointe. Maybe Williamsburg would have been laid out differently had they known that?
Was in the Williamsburg Hy-Vee over lunch. Looks like the expansion is underway. Noticed a big floor plan on display when I walked in. Noticed dirt work underway when I walked out. Plans look impressive. Best I could make out was an expanded pharmacy, maybe an additional couple of isles to on the north and then a large liquor dept. with a walk-in beer cooler. Can’t wait!
Wow, a rumor that actually proved true. Whodathunkit? I’ll be in there later today or tomorrow so I’ll be on the lookout for the plans you mentioned.
It would be nice if, upon completion, it more resembles the new stores on 84th and on O Streets, rather than the one at 70th and Pioneers where 80% of the store looks very dated and 20% looks like the new stores.
