I'm jealous of the employees at Duncan Aviation, where they have their own on-site fitness center. My employer's fitness amenities are pretty crappy. I'm going to talk to my boss!
::mutters under his breath::
My boss says I'm lazy, and that if I wanted to stay in shape, I shouldn't have eaten all of that ice cream and all those Doritos -- mmm, Poppin' Jalapeno Doritos -- last night. He has a point.
How common are the sorts of health incentives Duncan offers at employers around town? Do you have the opportunity to get buff at work?

See what your friends and neighbors have to say about this.
UNL is pretty good about encouraging fitness, we’re just not very good about being encouraged.
At Teledyne Isco (with 340 employees), they cite liability concerns whenever anyone brings up the topic of exercise equipment on site. I couldn’t even put an exercise cycle in my cubicle for my own use, lest others use it and get hurt.
But…they do feed us free donuts the 15th of each month! And free popcorn every now and then. And there are numerous candy jars throughout the place. Kinda hard to stay (or get) buff here.
My biking to work and my work have not been the best of friends.
I was able to sneak my bike into the capitol for about a year till i got caught.
Then my bike got stolen while locked up outside.
I am currently across the street and there is a bike rack which can be seen by security if they happen to aim the camera towards the rack.
The state does encourage wellness with their wellness program, but many folks have been clamoring for a secure spot to lock our bikes up. Biking to work does provide wellness. It would be nice if they could provide a central location monitored by security. I think a few lost stalls in the state office building for a bike cage that requires card access would be ideal.
For now I just use my 3 locks and depend on good luck.
Not many folks know, but in the basement of the capitol they have showers. Not sure what you have to do to get access to them, but I know they get used. Then you have the lunch hour race track in the capitol. I wish they had crossing guards sometimes.
That’s a cool story, and its nice to hear a local firm is doing this.
I would definitely accept a higher deductible or copays for my health insurance plan if the employer subsidized (partially or in whole) a health club membership of choice.
We are fortunate to have a partnership with a fitness club to have free membership. (They get commercials, we get memberships) This is the first such job that I’ve seen that at. I was visiting a friend in Las Vegas and they had a smaller type gym in the building. I asked him if he used it and he said “exercising isn’t fun, going to work isn’t fun, why would I exercise at work?”
I work at Kawasaki and we have “Club K” facility which is fantastic. Free weights, nautilus, bikes, bball court, and indoor driving range. Very nice.
I was in charge of setting up a company membership with a gym for the place where I work.
Unfortunately, the best deal I found is actually open to the public at Gold’s. (not a very “exclusive discount”!) Not many places I found had a good company membership program where the company pays a large one-time fee so the employees can forego initiation fees & instead pay only the monthly (possibly discounted) fee…anyone head of a program like this around town?
err..HEARD of a program like this
I’m curious - where do you work?
I haven’t heard of one, but I haven’t been looking either. Have you tried Madonna and BryanLGH’s Lifepointe yet? They have been touted as two of the best “medically-based” gyms in town and the fees there are $62 and $58 respectively.
