It was rumored a while back, but I don't think I remembered to confirm that El Sitio really has closed up shop on 17th Street and is moving in to the former Paul's location just west of 48th and Pioneers. I was really hoping Cristina's (in Crete) would open up a Lincoln location there, but that was a fantasy with almost no chance of coming true.
I haven't ever been to El Sitio but you can bank on me being among the first to walk through their new doors when they open sometime in October. (Apparently they're going to wait for some of the Pioneers Boulevard construction to clear up. Smart move.) My fingers are crossed that El Sitio becomes a simple place to grab grub not far from my home. And I really hope they have good guacamole. I'm a sucker for good guac.

I’ve been going to El Sitio since they had $.25 tacos in the early 80s (they also used to have Pac Man which was totally rad). Kind of sad that it’s leaving our neighborhood for longevity’s sake but I wouldn’t categorize it as any great shakes. Hopefully something I’ll use more moves in.
I’m with you JT, we’re hoping that something better moves in to El Sitio. We’ve been a number of times and have always had a meh, underwhelmed experience there. And then we always end up going back out of convenience or curiousity when new owners take over and always walk away wishing we’d dined somewhere else. It’s always been a huge curiosity to us how they do so well. They must have an extremely loyal following or cater to a specific taste. For the money, I’d take El Potrero any day. All this mexican food talk makes me miss Arturo’s so much….ahh, they had the best chilaquiles and jalepeno relish.
I have the same feelings for El Potrero that you have for El Sitio. I just don’t understand how El Potrero is still around. But to be fair, plenty of folks can’t figure out why I fawn over El Chaparro.
Speaking of chilaquiles, I’ve never had that dish at a restaurant. I really need to try it sometime. Any tips for the best source in town (other than Arturo’s)?
Yeah, I used to feel that way about El Potrero too until Arturo’s closed. I’m so stubborn about trying new mexican restaurants that I just haven’t ventured too far outside the box. BUT, I did go to El Chapparo at a friends request a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. I plan to return soon. As far as chilaquiles goes, I had only had it at Arturo’s and just tried it at El Potrero last week and thought it was great. I’ve also seen it on El Chapparo’s menu but haven’t tried theirs. Basically it’s a type of casserole made from leftover tortillas and meat with the “house” red sauce and lots of cheese. The one at Arturo’s was vegetarian and oh so good. El Potrero’s was good and covered in their white cheese, spicy too…they also have a choice of green or red sauce and chicken or beef. I’m a big fan. Definitely not a low carb meal by any means, but not much mexican fare is. Another reason we like El Potrero is they have a killer margarita special on Thursday nights. A big pitcher for $13 and they bring the glasses to the table 3/4 full of margarita already. We’ve started bringing friends with us b/c they are strong and we can’t finish a whole one just between two of us!
