Miscellaneous Observations

By: Mr. Wilson on September 20, 2007
A few miscellaneous observations after Date Night with The Missus: Blue Orchid is still awesome. I have never walked away from there unhappy with my food. I have ordered or sampled all of the curries, most of the stir fries, the pad thai, and a couple other dishes. Yum. (For the record, my favorite is the Panang curry with salmon.) Ivanna Cone? Yeah, it's still awesome, too. I noticed a new store in the building on the southwest corner of 10th and O. My Modern Somethingerother. (Life? Way?) It appeared to be a store specializing in "modern" furnishings. That's not my cup of tea, but if it's yours, go check it out. Paul Daniels Interiors isn't the only business to leave its building and neighboring buildings. Pretty much every space looked empty or had a For Lease sign posted. I've been hearing some bad buzz about the service at Fireworks. In fact, some family members from out of town went there recently and described it as one of the worst service experiences they've ever encountered. Ouch! That's unusual coming from a member of the Lazlo's family which, not long ago, was frequently praised for its excellent service. I have not yet been to the new location. Have you? Is the service poor, or am I just talking to the wrong people?

Doesn’t surprise me that the service at Fireworks is poor, considering it’s part of the Lazlo’s family. Don’t get me started about my last Lazlo’s experience.

However, I do have to commend Lazlo’s in that even though their service was horrendous from the moment we walked they made up for it later. I wrote the manager/owner a letter detailing why I thought their service was pisspoor, and a couple of weeks later I got a nice letter in the mail apologizing for the service, and a $100 gift certificate. I was shocked!

I Still haven’t used the gift card yet…

Lazlo’s is good about making it up to you. I went to Fireworks once, just after it opened, and the service was adequate but not extraordinary. I, too, have been sitting for some time on a $50 gift card that I haven’t used, even though it’s the closest restaurant to my house. Not sure what to make of that. I’ve had the card for months.

Speaking of bad dining experiences, and not the I had high expectations, but I ate lunch at the new SuperTarget the other day. Wow, what suckage. A VERY long wait, combined with bad service, culminating in bad food. Nice combination.

Fletch - They have a restaurant in Super Target? Do you mean that pizza hut express place? I was there on Monday night for the first time and it was pretty barren. Can’t say I was too impressed with the place in general, but I imagine if I lived closer it would probably be a convenient place to shop at regularly.

How dressy is the Blue Orchid?  Do I need a suit, Business casual, or will jeans and a nice shirt do?

Actually, last night I went in shorts and a t-shirt. Normally I would at least wear a nice shirt, but BO wasn’t the original plan; it came up after we were already in the car.

Long story short, for that sort of place I would recommend dressing “tastefully”, but don’t get too tied up in knots over it.

RE: Paul Daniels Building
As someone who, until July 31, worked in one of those now mostly empty buildings, here’s what I know. The Scott brothers (WRK Real Estate) bought the Peanut Butter Factory, Color Court and Cornhusker Printing buildings sometime last year. Earlier this year, we, and everyone else in our building, received notice that our lease wasn’t being renewed and that we had 90 days to vacate. We were told that the building was in need of major renovation (which is definitely true). So major that it wouldn’t be possible to remain in the building during the renovation. Rumor is that they plan to turn the Color Court building into a boutique hotel. Not sure that’s the case since they appear to be actively seeking new tenants. There was a story in the JS several weeks ago about Paul Daniels moving and the eviction of the other tenants in the other buildings.

Mr. T, yes that Pizza Hut express. It also has the offerings of most Targets: hot dogs, chicken nuggets, stuff like that. We were there on Saturday, a busy shopping day, and it was horrible. We waited maybe 15 minutes for a personal pan pizza and some chicken tenders for the kid. The other kid had a hot dog, and thankfully he doesn’t eat the bun because this one was hard as a rock. The girl wanted a juice box, and although the cooler next to the line was full of them, they told me they were out so she’d have to have soda or milk. I guess the nicest part is that we didn’t have to pay any extra for all the flies that buzzed the line, the food area, and the dining room.

Yes, paying extra for flies is a bummer.
