There are people who swear it’s better for the body from a biomechanical perspective. I’m in no position to argue, though I would like to point out that there are “unshoes” that allow a barefoot-like running experience while still providing a degree of protection from the road.
There’s also the “can I do it?” aspect. I mean, anybody who’s willing to run 26.2 miles clearly likes to push his body a bit.

I have seen a stories about it being more natural and comparing injuries to folks in running shoes vs. barefoot runners (tribes) in Africa. I asked people I trust about in my case, someone at Lincoln Running Company and my ART guy, and both told me with my heel pain, they would NOT recommend any minimalist shoes.
I do also question the barefoot - I am sure your feet just build up a tolerance, but just for a layer of protection, I’d rather wear Vibrams.
