Applebee's was selected as Best Dinner and Best Lunch in KFOR's annual Best of Lincoln survey. Admit it, somebody among you voted for Applebee's. Tell me who you are so I can kick you in the shin.

That is very disturbing. The BEST lunch and dinner in Lincoln?! My brother used to work there. I can’t remember if its a proud member of the sysco network or not, but bottom line, a lot of it is out of the can or freezer bag, with additives and ingredients that make you cry while reading them.
I also saw the KZUM radio “best of” list and “Valentinos” was I believe the city’s best pizza. That one still messes me up.

Oy. It’s always the same, though. Val’s is always best pizza (it makes me sick and the proximity of the law school to Val’s means I don’t attend many of the free pizza luncheons), Tico’s is always best Mexican, and so on.
I’ve been meaning to start a Lincoln Eats blog for awhile now because there is nothing on the web besides Jeff Korbelik’s “features” on Lincoln’s restaurants. You can’t tell what’s good. Case in point is his review of Little Mexico. He loved it, of course. He’s the only one as far as I can tell. Everyone I know who’s gone there has said it sucked badly. The Daily Nebraska restaurant reviewer wrote one of the most hilariously mean reviews I’ve ever seen about Little Mexico.
It wasn’t me that voted for Applebee’s heck I didn’t even get to vote.
Been there a couple of times though. (N. 27th)
Always seemed like a fastfood joint on steroids to me.
Never given it much thought, not sure which restaurant I would vote for if I did.
To my mind the best is usually what ever I am in the mood for when we decide to eat out.

Fastfood joint on steroids…LOL!!! I worked there one summer and I can’t stand it anymore.
And I agree with you Steve, the love affair with Val’s and this town is just mind boggling. I blame the university food service for turning me off the pizza. They would let it cool down and then heat it up again under the heat lamps. The pizza isn’t that good in the first place, but reheated Vals pizza is just plain nasty. And being as close to Nebraska sports as I am, that’s all I get. At least it’s fresh.

I’m stunned and disturbed that Applebees won Best Of anything. I haven’t seen the list yet but I’m not surprised that Val’s won again. I think people vote based on their memories of Val’s pizza, back in the days when it really was outstanding. Remember when Runzas were still good too?

Runzas were once good?

And remember when they were actually called Runzas? What the hell is an “oven stuff’d sandwich,” anyway? Ridiculous spelling aside, do they mean that their sandwiches are stuffed with ovens? That they stuff their sandwiches into the oven? And Runzas aren’t sandwiches. They’re more like German calzones.

Steve, I just had to look up the review you mentioned. Now that is a restaurant review!
