Lincoln’s Best: Parks

By: Mr. Wilson on October 16, 2006
It's "Lincoln's Best" week here at Lincolnite. Let's start with parks. What are Lincoln's five best parks? What makes them the best?

my nod goes to wilderness.  Mile after mile of trails.  Horses, bikes, and them walking folk all have their own trails.  Nice bridges, tons of wildlife, streams, trees, and if you know where to find them, pieces of history.

It is all about the nature.  Sure sometimes the trails get mowed, but other than that it is pretty much left alone.  It is strange, but you feel like you are in a forrest eventhough it is not that wide, just long.

I’d have to say Pioneer’s for the win. That place is HUGE, with wide-open spaces, and best of all: there is no one there. Wilderness comes in a close second. It’s a great place to run or walk - when you’re not being run over by hordes of mountain bikers (j/k).

I pretty much have to agree the pioneers is the best all around park.  if only we could get concerts out at pinewood bowl again.  The place is also fun on a bike.

Pioneers and Wilderness are the obvious wins now (and I’m with you on the getting concerts at Pinewood again BoK), but when I was naught but a knee-high lad, my two favorites were the giant rocket ship thing at Belmont park (which is now just a shadow of its former self) and Antelope park, which as a child I thought fully rocked.  One of the best playgrounds ever.  However, now they’ve revamped all the equipment, and, quite frankly, I’m in no position to test it out for awesomeness.

Also, Holmes Lake park is still a nice place to visit with a girl, a camera, and a sack lunch.

I’ll give another nod to Holmes Lake Park.  The improvements they made with the major renovation are pretty nice.  It’s now easier to walk/run around, with the new trails and bridges.  I happened to be running around the lake at night during the last full moon, and it was beautiful.    I pick up some kind of bug around my ankles, so I have to remember to wear longer songs when I go there.  But other than that, and the fact that I wouldn’t recommend anyone touch the water with their bare hands, it’s a nice place to visit and get some exercise.

I like Pioneers Park. Quiet, spread out, neat features (statues, columns, water features, nature center, golf course).  Functional, historical and natural all in one.  It’s a rare park in that respect.

Would anyone consider Wyuka for nomination?  I haven’t been inside but it was established in 1869 by the Legislature and was lincoln’s first “park.”
