Lincoln is about to get 226 acres bigger at a cost of -$100,000 annually. That's not a bad deal. It isn't clear how many hidden costs are involved in the annexation of State Fair Park, but Lincoln will not take ownership of the buildings, infrastructure, or utilities.

I am trying to understand the exact purpose of annexation, as the city will not actually govern the area, nor will the smoking ban apply! After enduring the city pool tournament last spring - which was like walking into one large smoke cloud - I was hoping the ban would now cover this area, too. Oh, well. :(
In a nutshell, Sarah, it’s just about the $100,000 in annual tax receipts. That’s really all there is to it. The fact that so little changes is one of the biggest reasons Lincoln is doing it. It’s practically all gain and no pain. For now.
One wonders what will happen down the road, though.
