Kudos to the LJS

image Criticizing is easy and commonplace, but giving credit is rare. Kudos to the LJS for running a front page story today on Hispanic-owned businesses in Crete, AND for a front page photo with an interracial couple. That obviously raised some eyebrows from the old guard as evidenced from the comments. This country is about to hit 300 million, one in three of which is a racial minority (By the way....welcome to the "real world" George Allen).

I agree, T. I was also pleased to see some heavy Darfur coverage in today’s edition, though I haven’t had a chance to read it yet.

Yes - far too often people just critique newspapers when they think they are covering a story incorrectly. A practice that I need to do more is give kudos to papers when they DO cover stories well, or cover them in an interesting angle.

Speaking of the Darfur coverage, I was actually VERY surprised to see this. The LJS almost never covers world issues as the headlining article, and when they do its about the war (which is as much a national issue as it is a global one). I wonder what the rationale was on the Darfur coverage decision.

I really don’t expect the LJS to cover world issues with any prominence, namely because its a daily for a city of 250k, and although there is a Sudanese community here, its not nearly as prominent as in other cities. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t cover world issues. But I usually go to the major papers for global news, who do it much better.

Personally I would prefer more in-depth coverage about Lincoln, and state issues in general. One can go to the NYT etc for world news. I am assuming, of course, that most LJS readers get their information from multiple sources and multiple platforms like I do. That is not the case however, particularly with older folks. I currently have my firefox tabs set for CNN, FOX, the NYT, BBC, Al-Jazeera, the LA Times and the LJS.
