Also, word is in that Jimmy John's will be one of the tenants in the nearly-complete building at 33rd and Pioneers. People tell me that JJ's makes Teh Bestest Sammiches EVAR!!1! but I've never been a huge fan. Maybe I'm broken.

What I like about JJ is they have slims which are just meat and cheese for under 2 bones. I am not one of them who enjoys all the veg and other toppings.
Plus vinegar jimmy chips rule.
I concur about JJ. I love the Vito with no tomato and oninon, but adding hot peppers. And the Vinegar Jimmy chips DO rule! We can also add YACJ - which I am glad to see, but there is a “Chinese Restaurant Coming Soon” to one of the strips between the Backyard Burger and the Wal-Mart down south. I haven’t been able to figure out how there are three Chinese joints at 56th and Old Cheney/Highway 2, but none have yet ventured further east and southeast from there. I hope it’s tasty!
You can add YASJ to the old Homer’s location downtown, from what the paper said a few weeks ago.

Read an interesting article a couple years ago about JJ. Their business plan was to build a JJ near the campus of each Big XII school. Then some non Big XII schools. Then expand from there. College students are their core demographic. It was interesting enough to me to stick in my head for some reason, not that it matters a hill of beans.
I concur about Jimmy John’s. I’ve always been underwhelmed there. Hopefully someone can open a check cashing institution near there as well. All three of those in the same building would be like winning the Lincoln development trifecta.
Now I want Jimmy Johns for lunch. 😛
There’s also YASJ going in next to the downtown Oso. I can’t remember the name, but the branding led me to believe that it’ll likely be a Jimmy John’s clone.
Is JJs the only thing going into that 33rd and Pioneers new building? When you said “One of the tenants”, it seemed to indicate there may be more. I’m assuming we’re talking about the new building on the Southwest Corner that promised “occupancy in May”. That didn’t go too well for them.
JJ’s will occupy the south half of the building. The north half is unclaimed at this point.
I tried to go to Taco King today. Unfortunately for me they are not taking Credit Cards right now so seeing how every one in my group never carry cash or check we had to leave to go else where for lunch. On a side note it felt like they didn’t have any AC in there either cause it was freaking hot for the few minutes I was in there.
Why would you want to accept credit or debit cards? Just another passing fad. I’m sure they won’t be around for long (rolls eyes). I really fail to understand why restaurants in particular make it so hard sometimes to do business with. I never carry a checkbook, and I don’t always have a ton of cash - so it amazes me when places won’t take debit or credit either. I do utilize checking, and also don’t fully understand all the places that no longer take checks. You can pay for services to verify them and the funding so you don’t get taken by bad ones. The costs are lower than the fees to take credit cards. Even at the risk of being burned once in a while, I think you open yourself up to the most customers possible if you take cash, and checks, and credit and debit cards. That should accomodate everyone. I have the mentality of a retailer, and I think rule number one is that you have to make it as easy as possible for your customers to shop with you. Why throw up barriers? (End of rant. Thanks.)
An ammendment to my prevouse post they said that their Credit Card machines were not working yet. I take to mean they will take them in the future. But I am glad I said it they way I did cause it set off Fletch’s AWESOME rant!! I loved that man!!!

My friend is a manager of JJ’s.
So apparently the erbert and goblert place was started by Jimmy John’s Cousin who got a store from Jimmy and then Jimmy offered some $ to expand and the cousin blew him off and started ezbert and globster. basically copied the exact same “style” and now they are like the hatfields and mccoys.
I would be scared to go down 14th cuz you might get hit in the crossfire 😉 They hate each other.

chains / franchises you are stuck to certain offerings and ways. Being independent and able to adapt is key.
I walked past the construction crew today. Looks like it is moving along. They have paper on the windows with their logo. Gonna be a while still I bet. It is nice that they will probably be branded well. As if they are approaching it as a franchise like atmosphere with the website and established logo.
I admire the effort they are investing in it already before it opens.
I love the idea for local mom ‘n pops to mimic the look of a franchise atmosphere with name, signage, and branding. It makes great sense. I do question (and I’m confused now about who is whom) the I’ve-never-owned-a-restaurant-but-everyone’s-gotta-eat-right? guy that opens a restaurant (coughcough Stackwoods coughcough), but I would think the downtown sammich market would be a tough nut to crack since they are everywhere, especially on the JJ/Doozy’s/Subway block.
Too bad to hear about Great Wraps - I’ve not been downtown, but I’ve had them at the mall and really like them. Also too bad about Taco Del Mar, but we beat that burrito to death in another thread. Some dude has to be taking a bath on that deal, opening and closing two of them had to cost a small fortune. It seems to me the dude had rights to a bunch of them or the area development rights, too. That’s gotta sting.
I concur with Beerorkid - bacon is a must-do. I also think you can’t go wrong with pepperoni!

While we’re talking about that 33rd and Pioneers area (or at least we were), I’m hearing that Scooters is looking at putting a drive-thru kiosk somewhere near (on?) the land that Russ’s has just south of there on 33rd and Hiway 2—and they also are planning a couple others around the city.
From what I hear the guy who owns taco del mar also owns another successful franchise.
I believe the owner of the downtown Subway is also the owner of the Taco Del Mar as well.
I know what you mean about the local branding. The former owner of the Chartroose Caboose in Lincoln owns a small franchise called PepperJax. They have locations in Omaha and have branded themselves pretty well.
With Lincoln diners’ tendency to prefer franchises, it’s probably a shrewd move to spend some time on branding even if you’re a one-shop diner.

well them lincolnites must be busy so I will try to make this the most commented post evar.
I plan on topping that club sammich today for lunch. Even though I got some good sleep last night, I hope this will put me in a coma.
Taking some comp time I earned so I will start at 1:30.
on the grill lightly toast the inner side of some honey wheat bread, cold virginia smoked ham, pepper bacon from Faltins meat in Howells NE, cold turkey, tomatoes, provolone, lettuce, grill roasted red peppers, skillet warmed pastrami, and some swiss. Finish it off on the grill and enjoy with a beer and some chips.
Or I could try a new taco joint, naw.
take out the lettuce and red peppers and replace with thinly sliced Walla Walla Sweet Onion and you are really talking…..........

I had lunch at El Ranchero Sunday. I had heard so many good things about it. Twas a bit low on fundage so got three chicken tacos. It was soft corn torts with some chicken, cilantro, and a heaping load of finely chopped onions. They should of just called it an onion taco.
I scraped off as many as I could, ate 1.5 of them, then ran home bleached and scrubbed the onion stank off me. had to shower with kerosene. They just don’t make water hot enough.

Kind of ruined El Rancho for me. I will try them again sometime and get some delicious enchilada or something.

Still a good sammich but the life partner threw away the lettuce and tomaters. Darn her (raises fists to sky) 😉
It was meat overkill to the max. The red peppers helped a bit, but it was a bit of a guilty meal. Finished 1/2 and picked the bacon off the second.
Oh well at least it was an adventure. Mangling three animals into one sammich does sound delish, but a plain pastrami with swiss is about as good as it gets.

One of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had was one a friend of mine made. Took some tomato basil bread from Panera and toasted it, added some grilled boneless chicken breasts from the Watering Hole that were leftover from his wedding reception, added some bacon and lettuce and swiss cheese. Might have had a tomato on it too. Mmmmm, mmmm, good.

Just searched new commercial building permits and see another Jimmy John’s coming to south Lincoln at 16th & Pine Lake. Sweet news for me! Just a hop, skip and a jump from home. I think that means there will be four JJs in Lincoln—downtown, somewhere on north 48th, 33rd & Pioneers and now on Pine Lake.
