Killing Creeping Charlie

By: Mr. Wilson on May 25, 2010
A portion of my yard is being overrun by what I believe to be Creeping Charlie. I've seen a few other yards in my neighborhood with the same problem. Have any of you dealt with this stuff? What have you tried to get rid of it?

See what your friends and neighbors have to say about this.

I used to have a huge problem with it - some diligence will pay off. I combined a regimen of spraying them with weed killer and pulling them out by hand. Nearly every time I would mow, when I would see them, I would just pull as many as I could and get rid of them. After a couple of years (it wasn’t my sole purpose in life), they were all gone. I don’t remember seeing one now in the past 3 summers or so.

If not, go to Earl May, get some Trimec+ and spray the whole yard or spot spray with a tank sprayer.

Is that going to nuke the whole yard? I may go down that road eventually, but not yet.

If it’s not going to kill the yard then I’m game.

Trimec won’t hurt the grass. But it will kill ornamental plants and flowers and can damage trees if there is a drift cloud.

Oftentimes a 1 to 2 percent stronger than recommended solution will really knock Charlie back.

Do it twice now, and again in October twice.  If it comes back next spring, hit it when it’s flowering.
