Haymarket Cubed

By: Mr. Wilson on April 16, 2013
Providing further evidence that you can do whatever you want as long as you have the lawmakers on your side, the City Council yesterday approved The Cube for the Haymarket's new "Railyard" area. The Cube is a 14 feet by 40 feet video screen that will feature art, promos, and who knows what else. And probably ads. I'm having a really hard time envisioning how this beast of a TV fits into the area so I'm eager to see it in action. Then again, I'm having a hard time picturing how the entire redevelopment area is going to come together. My brain still pictures train tracks where there are now buildings and streets. We're only a few months away from the big opening of all of this. I'm looking forward to it.

Me too. And to beat the crowd to the punch, I think any comments sections related to the arena must include the word, “Debacle” - so there it is. I don’t feel it’s appropriate, but I am sure it’s in there if I go read the LJS comments (which I won’t).

Please tell me they also frequently use the word “boondoggle”. If not, they’re really missing out on a fantastic opportunity.

I think you are correct. Boondoggle could even be more frequent. I’m still pissed about the Tweet the LJS sent out too quickly after the blast yesterday, so I won’t go read their rag or the comments therein.

We have an unhealthy obsession with video content and video screens.  Oftentimes, a person will be monitoring more than one video at a time—monitoring a cell phone screen, staring at a tablet or laptop while sitting in a sports bar with walls covered with video screens. Thanks to the City Council, patrons of “Railyard” businesses can watch video screens in the businesses and an enormous screen outside the businesses. Remember when we used to “people watch?” Now we only watch people if the images of people are being broadcast on a video screen.
