Grow ‘Em High

It's unfortunate that Russ Schultz has to deal with a lot of unsubstantiated complaints in his line of work. That's annoying to deal with no matter who you are. But the guy is nuts if he thinks he's going to convince Lincolnites to let weeds grow twice as tall as current regulations allow. The current limit is six inches worth of ugly weeds. Mr. Schultz wants to increase that to an even foot, consistent with many other comparable cities in the region. He says it'll help cut down on the number of "false" complaints so that he can focus on the real scofflaws. I doubt many Lincolnites really care about the number of unsubstantiated complaints he has to deal with. They just want to make sure their neighborhood doesn't look like a dump, and understandably so. Now that I look at a ruler, six inches isn't all that tall. It's easy to see why Mr. Schultz has to deal with a lot of complaints. It wouldn't take long at all for a lot to fill with six inches worth of weeds. Incidentally, if you want to complain about weeds, you can do so online.

I don’t have a problem with changing it to 1 foot.

I mow my grass tall to conserve water and I suspect that my freshly cut lawn stands between 3-4 inches tall. That means when it needs to be cut again, it’s easily 6 inches tall. It never looks like a vacant lot.

My mower is set this time of year to 4 inches.  I mowed Sunday and I will bet that all of my grass is 6 inches tall by the time I plan to mow tomorrow.  Taller grass conserves water and also helps to choke out weeds, not promote them.

With increasingly limited resources, Lincolnites have to start deciding what they want to pay for. Do we want to chase down 6” weed complaints, or do we want to spend time/money taking care of the bigger weed problems, the 12”+?

I don’t complain until they get past a foot anyway, but the poor employee in question kind of comes off sounding like a whiner. That’s your job, dude.

The main reason for the 6” law is to prevent the urban spread of rodent diseases like the plague (yes it still exists, even in NE).  Please do not let your lawns grow long in a city, outside in a rural area is a totally different situation

Would the plague be followed by locusts?

I kid.

It’s not my neighbor’s yards that worry me. It’s the weeds in the vacant lot next door that get taller than my 6’ privacy fence that I find troublesome. It’s happened multiple times a year, for 2 years, now going on 3. I don’t expect it to be different in 2008.
