Bored by the current sandwich offerings in Downtown Lincoln? Two new options just opened up: The no-frills interior of Bread and Cup Bread and Cup specializes in homemade breads and soups served "simply". No frills here. Well, there is one frill: owner Kevin Shinn has a blog. Look for Bread & Cup at 8th and S in the Historic Haymarket. image Roost Sandwiches features "the world's most intense, original gourmet sandwiches". Fourteen unique sandwiches grace Roost's menu. Roost’s website is pretty cool.  Not a big fan of flash, but done very well.  And their sammiches look interesting.

My wife and I went to lunch at b&c today, too. It’s a very, very cool place. I hadn’t visited that block in some time; it’s hard to believe it’s actually the same place.

Oh, and the food was really good and the service was about as friendly as could be. Like garlic? Try the beef or pork sandwich on ciabatta with their garlic & onion cream sauce. Can’t go wrong.

The owners have definitely gone to the “create-a-unique-experience-for your-guests” school of management, right down to the Starbucks-style bread∪ music CD for sale next to the cash register. Nice touch. I also think the ‘ampersand’ motif they use as the centerpiece in all of their designs is pretty slick. The whole operation was pretty slick, come to think of it.

We’ll definitely go back.

some comments left on my site:

my girl friend is now working in the kitchen at the bread∪. I ate there twice today had the tuna salad and a bowl of french onion soup at lunch and a chicken pesto sandwich and another bowl of french onion soup for supper.

they just got their liquor license today but the distributor didnt show up to drop off any beer or wine. there going to have old style,sierra nevada wheat,lefthand milk stout,anchor steam,and hopluia all on tap plus a selection of wines. also if you like chocolate try the truffles they are awesome.

Went to Bread and Cup for a cinnamon(one or two n’s?) roll and coffee this morning.  Wow.  I will be a regular.  Noticed their website did not mention hours of operation so mentioned to them.  7 AM ‘til late.

I just had a pesto chicken sandwich at Roost. It was really very tasty, but small - so small I could fit half of it into my shirt pocket. Cost $5. But it was very tasty.

Ate at Bread and Cup for lunch today. I had the French onion soup and a fish (curry tuna salad) sandwich on wheat. We finished with a cinnamon roll.

The best thing about the meal was the cinnamon roll. Very tasty and not cooked so much that it was rock hard. We’re told they are even better with caramel but they were out of the caramel by lunch time. I thought it was near perfect as it was.

The tuna sandwich was kind of dry, needed a little more something to make it creamier. I think the dry mixture would work well on their salads, but on bread it needed something more. The bread was quite good and I look forward to trying their other breads.

The sandwiches came with a nice helping of mixed greens and some fresh cheese on top. No dressing, just the greens and cheese. At first it looks like it might be dry but it’s not at all and it was quite tasty.

My French onion soup was fine. Nothing out of the ordinary.

One of my friends had a pork sandwich and the other a beef sandwich. Both said the meat was very good. Both also said the creamy garlic sauce was too sparse. Maybe ordering it on the side next time would allow them to customize the sauce on their sandwich.

The restaurant’s walls are beige and they do not yet have artwork up. The place will warm up a little once they get some things on the wall.  The tables are large and you don’t feel crowded at all.

Overall this is a nice place and I will go back. I worry about B&C’s prices against competition like BisonWitches, which serves more food for the dollar and has a unique menu. B&C has BW beat, hands down, on atmosphere/vibe but right now B&C’s location isn’t a plus for them. In time, that may turn around as more people occupy the renovated space around them.

Give B&C a try. The people running it are nice. Good folk.

I’m anxious to go back and sip a drink on their patio when it opens. Maybe try their cheese and bread plate. The bleu cheese in their display case looked AWESOME.
