Wow, I had no idea that Lincolnites reported thefts from cars at a rate of eight each day in 2006. That's over 3,000 crimes resulting in over $1 million in damages. I wonder how that compares to other cities Lincoln's size?
I have never had anything stolen from inside my car, though I did have my license plates stolen once. The Missus' poor little Chevy Nova was broken into in the Lincoln Southeast parking lot several years ago. I think the thief made off with a handful of change.

I lived in a city about a third the size of Lincoln for several years and my car was busted into twice, once for my car stereo and another time for some CDs and some change. Since living in Lincoln that has never happened to me.
I lived in Denver, Co for 9 years. Not in the suburbs - in the city/county of Denver. The heart of a metro area with 3+ million people. In 9 years not one break in. Not at home, not at work, not parking on side streets at events, nothing.
We moved to Lincoln and in less than a year someone broke into my wife’s 12 year old car that was parked in front of our house. The thief got a pair of prescription sunglasses out of it. Of we thought they did until I found half of the sunglasses broken up in the gutter a week later.
I’d chalk it up to the random nature of the universe if I didn’t have 4 co-workers who have also been broken into since I moved here. That makes reading the statistic above NOT SURPRISING AT ALL.
I know one thing. Locking the doors on my wife’s car only did one thing - force us to get the window replaced. Replacing her stereo would have cost less!
I read the article and was frustrated to hear the “shrug the shoulders” approach to this issue. I’m no criminologist or sociologist, and have no suggestions as to a solution, but if that’s going to be the attitude, them maybe the city of Lincoln should start offering tax credits for window replacement fees. It would make suffering through what is apparently just a [insert shoulder shrug here] reality of life in Lincoln a little more bearable.
