Eat for George’s Family

By: Mr. Wilson on February 4, 2008
This Sunday at Duggan's Pub (440 South 11th) there will be a benefit for the family of George Landolt, the infamous George of George's Red Pepper Grill and Crawdaddy's fame. You know, the guy behind quarter tacos, mofo salsa, and the big ass burrito. Landolt died last year of complications from diabetes at the age of 50. George's tacos will be available at the day-long event. Unfortunately, I can't find the details online and our Sunday newspaper already made its way to the recycling bin. I believe the timeline was something like Noon until 10pm. A number of bands will perform, and there will be a silent auction. If any of you happen to still have your Sunday paper handy, could you look up the article and post the details? If nobody posts, I'll give Duggan's a call later today.

It’s free (a free-will offering will be taken) and there will be a lot of music. The bartender at Duggan’s today didn’t have a lot of information. The money will go to the Landoldt family.

Wow - I am out of the loop.  I had no idea he had passed away.  25-cent tacos were a true Sunday morning tradition throughout high school & college for my circle of friends, especially when it was over by Claremont.  How sad…

A tribute to “Taco Man” George Landolt on Feb. 10 at Duggan’s Pub, 11th and K streets, will benefit his family.
Landolt served 25-cent tacos in Lincoln for nearly 25 years until his death last July. He was known for his tacos filled with ground beef, lettuce, cheese and a choice of homemade sauces - mild, spicy and his infamously hot “mofo.”
The tacos were served at Knickerbockers on Thursdays as well as at Landolt’s restaurants, first, George’s Red Pepper Grill, and later, Crawdaddy’s. Years before, he served them at other Lincoln bars.
On Feb. 10, the signature tacos will be served and live music provided in a day-long tribute at Duggan’s Pub.
The music will start at noon, starting with three bands from the Academy of Rock, made up of middle school students taught by local volunteers. The music will continue all day, with bands including The Toons, Cry 4 Help, Magic Slim with Bad Moon Rising and The Retreads. The event culminates with a performance by Levi William at 8:30 p.m.
A silent auction will be available from noon to 6 p.m. No cover will be charged.
Landolt’s former employees and longtime friends, LuAnn Thomsen and Chris Williams, are spearheading the effort. “I think George’s friendship touched more people than we’ll ever know,” Thomsen said. “This is how we wanted to pay tribute to his life.”
Landolt died from complications related to diabetes at age 50.
