Eat Eat Eat: Super Taco

By: Mr. T on December 1, 2007
Lunched at Super Taco today at 56th and Holdrege. This is a little family-run joint with a unique, hole-in-the-wall atmosphere and a menu that has a bit more variety to it than some of the more frequently-cited Mexican places in town. It is well known for its lunch taco special, where one can choose from a whole variety of meats, including tripe, lengua, pork skin, steak, chorizo, flank steak, breaded steak, seasoned pork, or head. But the menu has some other nice items as well. image The combination torta (about $5) was recommended as a favorite by the friendly waitress. It was layered with chicken, chorizo, cheese, onions, avocado, tomato, and jalapenos on a relatively large and fresh, crusty bun. In between Mr. Wilson’s random musings about the success of the Wii console and his seasonal plumbing projects, I could tell from the speed with which he gulped this down that it was an enjoyable and filling meal. He later claimed that he would definitely get it again, especially for lunch. image I opted for a traditional chicken taco ($1.25), which was white meat with the standard cilantro and onion garnish. A nice, clean taste indeed. image And also a heavier lengua taco ($1.25). image The tacos were good, standard fare. My real winner, however, was the sope con carne ($3.75). It was fried dough – roughly the length and width of about two small hands put together – topped with white beans, a mild red sauce, white cheese, cream, and carne asada. White cheese = goodness. As you can see from the photo, the steak isn’t huge chunks you might find elsewhere, but smaller, caramelized bits. It was still really good. The dough was fried crisp, but it was still light and not heavy. And despite all the toppings, it didn’t have an over the top saltiness or greasy, messy feel. I should note though that I have had the sope there before and prefer the green sauce. Off the menu, on some days they have flan for dessert. If Lincolnite.com regulars are any indication, this town’s inhabitants can be stubbornly loyal to their preferred battery of favorite, local Mexican restaurants. If you are reading this, consider adding Super Taco to your current arsenal if you happen to live in the area. If not, its still definitely worth the drive over.

Thanks Mr. T for the review.  The Mrs. and I love to try the “hole-in-the-walls” but a lot times aren’t aware of some of them.  This one is news to us.  We’ll definitely make the trip.

Speaking of “hole-in-the-walls” (sort of) we are becoming regulars at the South 9 Chargrill, and just had a meal there today.  We really enjoy that place, and are happy to see lots of people feel the same (good crowds today).  Lincoln really needs to support those locally-owned places…they really are delicious!

I’m anxious to try this place now that I see your excellent review Mr. T! Still need to get to El Chaparro too. I also hear that something has opened in the old El Charro.

net_nut, hands down, I agree with you that South 9 Chargrill is a great place. I have also met the owner and he is a very personable and friendly guy. I am glad it has caught on in the neighborhood.

Foxspit - Let us know what the dealio is with a new place at El Charro’s location. I like El Chapparo and do the take-out all the time since its a stone’s throw from my place. Be warned about lunch time though. There are like 8 tables and 800 customers during the lunch hour.

I agree with you on 9 South. I have been very impressed with it on my two visits.
