Deena Winter is a Liar!

By: Mr. Wilson on June 20, 2007
OK, OK, she isn't really a liar. But she is a tease for headlining her column "Big news from Antelope Valley". (Yeah yeah, she may not have even been the one to come up with the headline.) Here I got all excited, when in fact the "big news" is just hypothetical news about some hypothetical projects. Harrumph. Y'all know I'm just ribbing Ms. Winter, right? I enjoy her City Hall Notebook column. I probably learn more from her weekly column than I do from all of the rest of the articles in the Wednesday paper combined. Such as: Crandall Arambula, the Portland, Oregon, consulting firm that headed up the Downtown Master Plan, wants to write the design standards for Antelope Valley. To that I say: bah humbug. Maybe that's too harsh. I'm not anti-Crandall Arambula. I'm just not excited about them. I don't want Antelope Valley to look like the vision held by some group from Portland, and I don't want Antelope Valley to look like every other project Crandall Arambula works on. I want Antelope Valley to look like Lincoln.

I wouldn’t mind Lincoln looking a little like Portland. It’s gorgeous there- you can definitely see the hand of city planning. I don’t think a firm that’s done design work one place will necessarily do the same in Lincoln, though.

I’m curious as to what “looking like Lincoln” entails? What’s your vision for the area? I can’t really think of anything that defines “Lincoln-ness” - one of the things that’s always struck me is how generic most of Lincoln is. (It’s not a bad thing, better than being known for a ghetto.)

I think I’m ready for a new look too, as long as function isn’t forsaken for form.

I like what they are doing in Lincoln at Village Gardens or whatever it’s called (56th and Pine Line where Campbells is the landowner). I think they just need to be more consistent with the look. Fallbrook had promise, but it seems that some streets there have a great, classic look that ties in with the whole street, and the next street up looks like my neighborhood (Vintage Heights). I think Village Gardens holds some promise if they can keep the consistency. There are some very cool looking houses and townhomes in there, albeit it amongst a smattering of eyesores. That row of townhomes or condos that is going in now right along Pine Lake Road looks good in neither form nor function, and I’d be cheesed if I spent hundreds of thousands for the houses just up the block.
