Comparing the Candidates

By: Mr. Wilson on March 21, 2011
The Journal Star has a couple brief overviews of the candidates for Mayor. Check out the profile of Chris Beutler and the profile of Tammy Buffington. I don't have a lot to say about these glimpses at the candidates because, frankly, neither candidate put much on display for us. Mayor Beutler's responses are significantly more concrete than Ms. Buffington's. Answering whether that's due to Mayor Beutler being the only one with a record to point to or Ms. Buffington's inability to give a straight answer is left as an exercise for the reader. I haven't written much about the upcoming election for mayor because, frankly, I don't feel like I've had anything nice to say. About Ms. Buffington, that is. I don't agree with Mayor Beutler's every move, but he hasn't done anything to scare me off. Ms. Buffington, on the other hand, has given me no sign that she's ready to be mayor. She doesn't seem to have any sort of leadership resume, and her "solutions" to Lincoln's problems boil down to "trust me, I'll be able to fix that after you elect me". I'd feel much more confident if she had real solutions up for debate right now (on her website, for example). What's your take on the mayoral race right now?

I wouldn’t vote for her to head the PTA or a committee at church. She’s really the best candidate that anyone could come up with? She looks/sounds worse to me every time she opens her mouth. I’ll probably just sit this one out.

I will not sit this one out, because the thought of her winning scares me a little.

Karin….Tammy Buffington chances of winning are very slim to none. I like Fletch I’m sitting this out, too, because lack of good candidates for mayor or city council races.

ok, I agree with Tammy on the spending issue in a major way.  Yes…Mayor Beutler

She’s absolutely right on the spending. If her point is that we should not and cannot spend more money than we take in, I can get on board with that idea at the city, county, state, and Federal level.

The problem is, she appears to not have a clue exactly how much comes in, how much is actually spent, or how to find more to move the city forward. I am a HUGE proponent of both the South and East Beltways - but I know we can’t fund them simply by digging spare change out that falls into our couch cushions.

Her Facebook ad is brutal.

I kind of got the feeling from listening to her that it was kind of a lets not spend money on anything type of ring,  besides the beltways.

I don’t see the beltways happening…Lincoln is kind of backwards in their planning anyway.  Every other city in the nation grows around it’s interstate, Lincoln’s sprawl grows away from it.  I have very little sympathy for those who bought in South Lincoln…really you bought a nice house way out there and now you expect the rest of Lincoln to pony up for you?

I see the developments out in the Fallbrook area as very smart location.  Right next to interstates, etc.  Smart after all these years.  The planning was just backwards…mmm, I wonder why all these other city’s are growing around the huge road in the middle?
