Bye Bye Wi-Fi

By: Mr. Wilson on November 5, 2007
I know the recommendation to hold off on city-wide wi-fi will disappoint many of you, but I, for one, am relieved. Wi-fi is dead. Investing millions of dollars to turn Lincoln into one giant hot spot tomorrow using yesterday's technology isn't too far removed from just throwing those millions down the toilet. New technologies -- WiMAX among them -- are better for many different reasons. If Lincoln wants to hop aboard the municipal wireless bandwagon, doesn't it make more sense to go with a technology at the front end of its lifespan, rather than near the end? I wonder what sort of technologies Alltel, Time Warner, and even Verizon are working on...?

I guess I agree with them.  I have never once used a wifi spot here in lincoln.  Although I loves me the internets, I do not want to carry my laptop around.  Now if I had an iphone I would prob know the hot spots since it would use them when it could.

The little park, foundation gardens(?) between windstream and the corn popper has wifi.  That would be the only place that I know of.

Agreed, if you are gonna do it, do it right with the new cool stuff.

Alltel, new technology.  Alltel took the phone company backwards when they (Alltel) bought the phone company.  Windstream is part of Alltel; I don’t see either of them being “cutting edge”

Windstream not cutting edge? When I think of cutting edge, nothing screams cutting edge more to me than and old green pickup trick sitting out in a field. What would make you think they are not cutting edge?

As far as Time Warner. I am sure I speak for the community when I say that handing a project like this over to them would be smooth sailing after seeing the painless, easy transition they made from Passport to Navigator, and with the positive customer experience they offer. Who wouldn’t trust this in their hands?

It is entirely possible that yes, you do sense sarcasm in my comments. Indeed.
