Got a hankerin' to dissect Lincoln's budget and find programs to cut to save some cash? You're in luck. You can check out 224 budget items and their costs and ... well, if you're lucky you'll figure out how to rescue the City's budget.
I haven't had a chance to dive in too deeply yet so I'm not sure if any surprises lurk within. Can you find any easy cuts? Any that will make a dent?

See what your friends and neighbors have to say about this.
A number of relatively expensive items (snow removal, sidewalks, all street maintenance, &c;.) with $0 amounts in the Prioritization chart are funded by “Street construction”.
Looking at the 2009 chart
http://lincoln.ne.gov/city/mayor/takingcharge2010/pdf/indicators/2-4-econ-opp-indicators.pdf
... built a year ago by “Rick”, one can see that these items which aren’t funded in the Prioritization plan are also un(der)funded in the Street Construction budget.
Even though the bars and labels on “Rick’s” chart are clearly incorrect for FY10-11, the message is inescapable: transportation socialism is chronically underfunded by amounts that could pay for two entire fire departments.
That ~$30 million shortfall in streets makes the little cuts - libraries, neighborhoods, swimming pools - seem petty and insignificant.
As for the easy cuts, well yeah, I can find one: Leave your car at home. Ride your bike. Take the bus. Or both.
And yet… no one blogged about this expense… (well except for that cold woman).
