Yesterday's post by Scott Adams made me try to think if I have ever had a close encounter of the celebrity kind in Lincoln. I haven't, as far as I can recall. Have you?
My only real celebrity close-encounter was the time I nearly stole Larry King's cookie at the Rose Bowl. I had a press pass for taking photographs of the Cornhusker Marching Band's pre-game and halftime performances from the roof of the press box. I was thinking about picking up this cookie when Larry King himself appeared from nowhere, said "I forgot my cookie", and then disappeared into one of the private suites with his reclaimed dessert.
Edited to add: I can't believe I forgot this story. One day while I was in grad school a couple friends and I ate at Yia Yia's. As we left, we brushed shoulders with a small group of people headed inside. One of my friends froze and stared. I asked what was up. "You don't know who that was? That was Connor Oberst. Bright Eyes. You guys don't know him?" We didn't. Then my friend did one of the strangest things I've ever witnessed. He closed his eyes, inhaled deeply, and dreamily said "Oh man, you can still smell him."

See what your friends and neighbors have to say about this.
Once when I lived in Colorado I was visiting a friend in Littleton. We’d had a few tasty beverages and could hear music drifting from the nearby downtown area. We wandered over and found a small street festival/car show going on. As we were walking around, I heard a voice I recognized, but couldn’t figure out whose it was. A couple of minutes later I found myself face to face with Micheal Moore.
This was the late 90’s, and he seemed as surprised that I recognized him as I was to see him there. I told him how much I enjoyed his work, and he seemed genuinely thankful for me to have even said anything. He said he was in town getting footage for a project about fast food that he was working on, but Bowling for Columbine came out 6 months later, so that may have been a smoke screen given the raw emotions in Littleton at the time.
We chatted for a coupe of minutes and went on our ways. He seemed very much like a normal Joe.
I’ve met a few celebrities. I met John Cusack at a small theater in Los Angeles, he was sitting right behind me and I noticed him when I was coming back from intermission. He was nice and polite and seemed genuine in his thanks for my praises.
I met Johnny Depp at his club one time when I went there for a friends birthday party. It was brief, as in, “Hey,” “Hey.”
Theres a few others who didn’t make much of an impression on me or who I could really care less about and so I don’t think about it.
