Being a severe weather fan is weird. On the one hand, forecasts like today's get me all hopped up. I love the action of a good mix of rain, hail, wind, and lightning.
On the other hand, of course, there's the fact that all that stuff can be really damaging, or even deadly. It's hard to talk about how "cool" a storm is when it kills somebody or destroys their home.
That leaves me to hope for lots of talk but not much action. It's not quite as exciting, but hey, I don't really want my house (or yours) to end up scattered across town.
How many severe weather fanatics do we have out there? What was your most memorable experience?

Maybe a bad day to have ridden my bike to work 😉
I love Sever Weather.
When I was in HS I was driving home from work one night. My parents lived out in the country. As I was driving they said on the radio that our county was under a Tornado warning again (Third or Fourth of the night). They start giving the location of where it was spotted and I realize that is really close to me. Sure enough at that moment there is a big crack of lighting and I can see the tornado about Three miles south of me in the middle of a field. It slammed my foot on the gas and got home fast! 😊 It was pretty neat!
when I’m standing outside taking photos of crazy weather. It’s fascinating to me. The power of it.
I recall a very nasty storm that blew in one evening in 1992. Sirens sounded, wind was pushing 80 mph. I believe that’s the night Lincoln may have had a twister over on Adams Street.
I’m not affiliated with this guy at all, but he takes some great shots of storms in Nebraska.

I was living in Astoria Oregon which is where the Columbia meets the Pacific. My youngest sister was exactlly one week old. I can remember my Mom sitting in the kitchen holding her while we listened to a hurricane knock down trees all around us. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbus_Day_Storm
A few years ago my young daughter and I were camping in the Black Hills when a storm swept in with hail the size of eggs. With all the trees, you couldn’t see the storm approaching - it was just suddenly upon us.
It was during Sturgis, so folks were dragging their bikes into outhouses to protect them. Our car was a distance away so we ran to our tent, pelted by hail, which ripped through our tent in spots and covered the ground to point it was white. Our car got a ripple finish and a cracked windshield.
I enjoy storms, but face that same dilemma - great to watch, but tough when damage is done.
I used to live in tornado alley in Kansas where, if it rained at all, it was always accompanied by violent weather. At the time I was young and enthralled by the power. Now I worry too much about things like shingles and siding and where my daughter is whenever bad weather hits.
It sucks to get old. I can’t even enjoy a tornado like I used to.
😊
We’ve already had a tornado touchdown in western nebraska. Kearney has had some touchdowns.
I’m a huge severe weather fan. Being on the media side its a little different. I am responsible for letting people know about the severe weather.
My one memory of severe weather actually is the Hallam tornado. I was working at 10/11 that day and it just seemed like it was one of those “severe weather days” but when all out of the blue the anchor says “The governor will be here in 10 minutes” we all kinda looked at each other and knew it was something pretty big.
My other memory of severe weather was last year when I was in Imperial. Sirens have never really bothered me that much. When you’re in a big town and a siren goes off, that means that a tornado is suspected in or around that town. And the odds of hitting you are small. Well when the sirens go off in a small town, it makes your hair stand up on your neck cause the chances of it hitting your town greatly increase.
I don’t think its wierd to be a serious weather fan. I would think so if I havn’t watched Twister
people are obsessed with many different things. i think its just fine for someone to be a serious weather fan. we need people like them to get the weather news
