Art Over the Road

By: Mr. Wilson on March 27, 2007
In the biggest over-the-road news since The Archway, the City Council has approved a giant mural on the skywalk over 12th Street in Downtown. The mural will feature "10 people of various ages and ethnicities walking, some of them standing, with a brick wall in the background. It will cover the whole skywalk, which is 86 feet long." Sounds a tad hokey to me, especially for the Downtown art corridor, where one might expect something a bit more daring. Oh well, assuming the mural ages well it certainly won't hurt anything. The mural will be installed by mid-June.

I like that a local artist did the artwork.  Murals, in general, don’t do a lot for me but I’m anxious to see 12th Street develop into an art corridor.

I just looked up ‘artistic cliche’ in the dictionary, and saw a picture of a mural depicting a community’s diversity.  This is the most creative idea to come from the city since the fast food/bank/Walgreens idea for 48th and O.

“People walking inside the skywalk will still be able to see out

It sounds dangerous to me.  What if people are driving and look up at it and hit pedestrians?  What if people can’t see out of it very well and become sad?  Aren’t we living in a post mod world?  Hello!  There’s nothing pomo about this!  The city is making a grave mistake here from which we will never recover…

Worse yet, what if they look up, THINK they’re about to hit a pedestrian (the mural is of people, after all), swerve and run into a gaggle of school children on a field trip??? The Horror!

Speaking of murals, why haven’t they added a new one where that cheesy one was at 9th and O? It’s the way a lot of people come into the city, a mural there would be nice. Unfortunately , the way mural committees work, all we’ll ever get is blandness.

And then all of the children that aren’t instantly killed in the gaggle of terror quit church and become gay!!!

AAAAAAAAACK!!!!!!

😊

Seriously, I think it might be kind of a cool mural.

Perhaps Larry Roots has others working with him in his gallery to see his vision through. Funny how this art stuff works.

I’m wondering about the process through which the mural was chosen… was it a blind pick? I’m glad an artist from Lincoln was chosen, in any case. If the project works, maybe they can do a similar wrap on the equally ugly 11th St walkway. Maybe this time they can issue a call locally? (Maybe they did, and I didn’t see it, but I get a lot of artist calls and don’t remember that one)
