All Those Opposed…

By: Mr. Wilson on June 10, 2010
It seems UNL's move to the Big 10 is all but a done deal, or so the media hype machine would have us believe. So far everybody seems to be in favor of the move. I wonder, though, if there are Husker fans out there who are opposed to the change. Are any of you opposed to it? Have you heard of people who oppose it? Personally I haven't heard a peep of opposition. Are we really unanimous on this?

I’d rather stay with Kansas, KSt., Iowa State and OU. Sadly, this doesn’t look possible without mortgaging NU’s future as an athletic and academic institution. The Big 10 is a ton more stable and offers more cash for sports and research.

As a native Kansan I am biased, but I can’t imagine that this will be good for Husker fans. Longer road trips, less history, less in common geographically, negligibly more $$ in conference revenue, political power struggles with Michigan, Ohio State, and likely Notre Dame, you get to travel north in late fall and for all the winter sports, the loss of traditional rivalries with all the Big 6, 7, 8, and 12 border states… I just don’t see the positives outweighing the negatives. Perhaps I am wrong. Time will tell.

My biggest concern has nothing to do with that, however. My fear is that this may ultimately lead to the end of the NCAA in favor of a made-for-TV semi-professional college sports system. That may have been the case regardless, but this is the first domino.

Sadness, Don Juan.

“...he end of the NCAA…”

You just made my heart pitter patter with glee. I loathe what the NCAA has become, including what they do (and don’t do) to athletes. The NCAA can suck a bag of hammers.

I disagree with most of your analysis. True, there is less history, but the formation of the Big 12 kind of killed much of the old Big 8 history anyway. I will miss the natural rivalry with KU, but won’t shed a tear for KSU. I think playing and aligning with Iowa is a huge step up from Iowa State. And Michigan and Notre Dame and Ohio State and Penn State are some of the most traditional and well-known football schools ever. I think that’s a trade for OU and Texas.

In terms of dollars, I would hardly count it as negligble. I think it stands to be $7-8 million more for the athletic department annually, as the conference sits today. If they snag Notre Dame that will rise even more.

I think it’s a huge plus for the University overall, as the Big 10 seems to be held in higher esteem academically across the nation. I think it will bring in a ton more research dollars, and coupled with the new techonology park, I think the U will actually benefit much more overall than the athletic department.

And the end of the NCAA would not be a terrible thing. At least their involvement in football.
