13th and M

Mary Lou - the owner of the old Filipino restaurant where Danny's Deli now resides - has reopened operations where they rented out the old M13 Bistro. Mary Lou flagged me down today as I was walking back home, as I used to visit her old eatery often. The new place just opened has a simple menu of sandwiches and other items. However, if you are interested in home cooked pancit (Wednesday's special) or chicken adobo (Friday's special), let her know in advance and she will cook some up for you on any day. I wonder if there is any other operation in the state that offers home cooked Filipino?

Not that I know of. When I lived in California, our Filipino neighbors used to cook for us kids all the time (they especially loved my sister). When I tried to make any of the same dishes, they turned out horrible.

They also owned a donut shop, which means we got free donuts about every week. Good times.

I’ve decided to try any get out of my eating rut- I allow myself one day a week to eat out, and I almost always go to one of two places. I need to try something new. So thanks for the tip!

I saw this the other day and it was PACKED for lunch.  I’m glad she’s cooking again.

I actually think its a good call on her part to open what is primarily a sandwich shop with a few select Filipino dishes. My sense is that in Lincoln, its hard to open up an east asian place (that will thrive) that is not either Chinese, Japanese, Thai or Vietnamese (or one of those quasi-BBQ huhut types of joints). I would love to see a strictly Malay or Korean place in town, but I don’t know if it would succeed. Heck, even in much bigger cities its rare to find Malay or Korean (especially Malay - which is fantastic).
