Would You Use an Ice Rink?

By: Mr. Wilson on April 9, 2007
If the City and UNL were able to build an ice rink would you use it? I can't help but feel like there wouldn't be enough interest to keep an ice rink open over the long term, but I don't think I have enough of a feel for the local demand to trust my intuition on this one. Do you think it would last? Where could it be located to minimize start-up costs and maximize usage?

There is probably enough interest, and there certainly is enough of a population base to support one. I have seen skating rinks in towns a third the size of Lincoln do well. Usually they are inside malls however.

Wouldn’t use it myself, but then I have really weak ankles.
I think it might go over-look at the interest the Stars have generated.

I would. Once a year.

Does that constitute interest? I don’t know.

During the winter months make a stop at the Ice Box at 5:30 AM some weekday and you’ll see for yourself if there is a demand for an ice rink.  It’s pretty sad when little kids dream of being a professional figure skater when they grow up, but in order to do so they have to get up waaaay before the sun rises and go to the local ice hockey “barn”.  As for myself, my 6 year old son plays hockey in the kids ice hockey league and my 2 year old is chomping at the bit to start in a couple of years, so yes I/we would benefit from it.
