Weekend Wrap-Up

By: Mr. Wilson on October 19, 2009
  • I've been fighting a cough for ... what's it been, 10 days now? Yeesh. It's much better now -- I don't have to throw my entire body into the effort any more. Unfortunately, I coughed so hard last week that on Saturday morning I woke up with a badly pulled muscle in my back. So what did I do? I went and reffed three soccer matches over the weekend. Yesterday's match in Omaha was particularly ow-inducing. I should treat my body better.
  • I missed most of Saturday's Husker football game. Was there really booing directed at the home team? Sometimes I really hate Nebraska's "fans".
  • The Missus and I took Robbie to Where the Wild Things Are on Sunday afternoon. It was a gamble. We had done our research and we knew that Robbie, at 3.5 years old, might not "get" it. He didn't. Nevertheless, I'm glad we went. I thought the movie was excellent. It is a daring interpretation of Maurice Sendak's book, respecting the original work while creating in its own right a new and memorable story about childhood. Not everybody was a fan. The mom and two kids behind us (ages 8 and 10, roughly) summed it up thusly: "That was stupid". I can understand why a person would not like the movie, but stupid it is not; that all three concurred with the "stupid" assessment says far more about the culture of their household than it does about the movie.
What did you do this weekend?

Honestly, I can’t say that I was overly impressed with Wild Things.  I took my 7 year old on Friday night and she thought it was entertaining, but I didn’t.  I can’t tell you what it was exactly about it, but I felt it was just very rushed and not very well written.  It’s disappointing for the child’s book to be re-written in a way that small children aren’t going to understand or even remotely grasp.  The entire thing was lost on my, typically intelligent, 7 year old… she just thought the monsters were cool.

hey mr. wilson, about your hacking: it might be pneumonia or walking pneumonia ... even though i hate to throw around H1N1, a lot of people contracted the virus and never got the flu symptoms, instead it weakens the immune system and allows bacteria to move into places (like your lungs) that would normally be sterile. so your hacking my be caused by such issues. if you haven’t been to the Dr’s yet, i would suggest going so you can get antibiotics to get better. skip the H1N1 test if you don’t have flu symptoms. good luck. i hope you stop coughing soon!

Since the other two topics are covered (and I know absolutely zilch about Wild Things), I will comment on the game atmosphere.  Nebraska has always prided itself on the “Best College Football Fans”, and though many other teams might disagree, there was a certain classiness to the fans in the Osborne years and Solich years.  The players always knew that.
This has really deteriorated.  Yes, there was booing, directed at players and coaching decisions.  The booing was nasty when Eric Crouch was on the Jumbo, but maybe that is a tradition anymore?  Fans need to start getting after the disrespectful, maybe this team will feel honored to play for you as we did in the past.
