We Supped at the Cup

By: Mr. Wilson on August 11, 2008
The Missus and I dined at Bread and Cup on Saturday evening, a full year after they first opened. I don't have a good explanation for why it took so long to get there. I'll be honest, Bread and Cup isn't my kind of restaurant. Rather, it's the kind of restaurant I wish was my kind of restaurant. If I had to pick between the two, I'd call myself more of a quantity guy than quality when it comes to food. That's not what Bread and Cup is about. Not that I'm ashamed of my food profile, mind you. Food preferences are personal. I just think it's just unfortunate that my taste buds don't appreciate the amount of work that goes into some foods. So let me simply summarize my impression of the food in a manner befitting one of Lincoln's more prominent restaurant reviewers: the food was good. It's a poor and incomplete description, yes, but this isn't really a review so I'm going to get away with it. The food is easily worth the trip a couple blocks off the beaten path in the Haymarket. You know what really sold me on Bread and Cup? The atmosphere. It was magical -- and that's not an adjective I'm likely to use very often. We ate outside and frankly the experience was damn near perfect. The temperature, the evening sun, the lack of bugs, the pleasant restaurant environment. It all combined to turn discussions about Batman and pooping toddlers into something very memorable. I do have one negative thing I would like to point out. Nobody seemed to know which food belonged to which table. It was bizarre to see -- at a restaurant where almost everything is carefully thought out -- so many employees wandering aimlessly with plates of food. "Is this your melon dessert? Is this your salad? Is this your pork sandwich?" It happened several times to different employees, I have to think something goofy was going on. Overall I was very pleased. I will add Bread and Cup to my list of recommendations.

My only complaint about the handful of times I’ve been there is the bad music. Every time I’ve went, there’s a crappy house music soundtrack, which you can of course buy on CD in the store.  I detest house music.

Other than that, the food is quite good, and they do have a decent selection of beers and wine.

Funny.  I ate lunch there last Friday, even though I had met the owner at the Farmer’s Market last year and had intended to go.

I loved it.  Their bread is delicious, the ingredients were fresh and uniquely combined.  I ordered gazpacho, expecting a traditional chilled, chunky soup but got the surprising all small pieces of tomato, cucumber, pepper and onion.  Very tasty and unique. Companions had the pork sandwich, beef sandwich and the Ploughman’s special.  All were quite happy.  And the atmosphere is very pleasant, despite the view of the post office.

I’ll be back for sure.

Did you say Batman?

How did you like the movie?

I thought it was excellent and I’m looking forward to the next installment. I really enjoy what they’ve done with the Batman stories.

This week looks like a great time to enjoy the outdoor seating at Bread and Cup. I like that their beer on tap is not the norm. Love their cheese selection too.

I don’t love their sandwiches, but I do like their bread, cheese and beer.

I totally agree. I really liked Batman Begins, and thought this was one of the better movies I’ve seen in a long while. I’ve always been a Batfan, and it’s exciting to see what’s been done. It’s a same we won’t see Heath’s Joker on screen again - incredible performance.

I’ve had the Ploughman, the pesto chicken sandwich, & the beef sandwich there.  By far, the best is the pesto chicken.  (Also available at Jazz in June - keep in mind for next summer!)

If you’re a fan of stinky cheese like me, they have some good stuff (agreed with foxspit).  And I love the roomy patio.

Observation:  For some reason I can’t figure out, the beef sandwich is about twice the size of the chicken sandwich.  Odd.

I’ve never been there for one of the “slow meals”, but I’m excited to try it sometime!

Bread and Cup is awesome. Everything I’ve had there is fantastic. Try their spreads with one of their baguettes sometime.
