Was That an Insult?

By: Mr. Wilson on October 21, 2005
Student: Mrs. Wilson, do you wear a bag of gold around your neck? Other Students: Oooooooooh! [Translation: "We can't believe he just asked that!"] Mrs. Wilson: ??? That exchange happened today in The Missus' classroom. The student didn't offer any further explanation. She's baffled, and Google isn't helping. Can any of you help us out? Was Mrs. Wilson insulted? Is she unhip to the latest teenager slang? What the heck happened?

I am pretty sure I know what it means. I will tell you privately. Just out of curiosity, what was the context and what grade level are her students?

You can go ahead and say it here. If you’re too shy you can e-mail me, but I may post it here anyway so that others get the full story. The Missus and I have what we believe is a good guess about the gist of the meaning. Your hesitance to write it here makes me suspect we’re on the right track.

The student is in high school. I’m not sure about the specific context; my impression is that it was fairly random. Her students have shown a propensity to blurt out inappropriate things in odd situations.

Wow I thought I was up on things and I haven’t the faintest idea what he said.

It’s a new one on me. Feel free to email me the secret decoder ring to release me from this darkness. 😊
