Uncle Sam Jam is Today

By: Mr. Wilson on July 3, 2012
Maybe it's because Independence Day falls on a Wednesday this year. Or maybe it's because I spend a large part of my days working alone in the basement. But whatever the cause, I just can't get into the holiday spirit this year. And that's why my first reaction to seeing this article in this morning's dead tree edition of the Journal Star was: Uncle Sam Jam is today?! As a Lincoln-oriented guy I should be encouraging you to go check it out. Unfortunately, I've never actually been to the event so I can't really vouch for its awesomeness. The evening fireworks show is, of course, the capstone of the event. If nothing else, that part is worth heading to Oak Lake or the surrounding area. As for the rest, my only advice is to take lots and lots of water and sunscreen.

I thought the same thing! Not sure why it’s on July 3, but maybe they always do it that way.

I hate it when July 4 is in the middle of the week. This year I bit the bullet and just took July 5 off since I know I won’t get any sleep any way.

I think they tried July 3 for the first time when Larry the Cable Guy did his show at Memorial Stadium on July 4. For some reason, it stuck. I have never gone to see the big fireworks since they moved it from Holmes Lake. However, I was treated to an excellent show last night that had to come from the vicinity of Hidden Valley golf course. City-caliber.

One explanation I heard—no idea if it’s accurate—is that the City put the fireworks show on tonight so that folks who have tomorrow off can stay up late and not be groggy for work the next day.

I believe the reason is to keep overtime/holiday pay costs for city workers to a minimum.

That makes sense. I don’t really have a dog in the hunt either way.

That sounds like a winner!

We live close enough that we just ride our bikes to the salt creek levee trail and walk our bikes to where we want to sit.  The food vendors are fun.  I got cotton candy last year 😊

Might try and park in a side neighborhood and walk down the trail instead of trying to park in one of the lots.  Traffic does move pretty well, but it is still a huge PITA.
