The Unnoticeables

By: Mr. Wilson on October 10, 2007
I was so excited when I discovered Mexicali Bullfrog, the tiny Mexican eatery tucked away near 70th and O. I went there three times in three weeks. Then they went and closed up shop. Fortunately, I then discovered Smokehouse Deli, just a stone's throw from my house on the southeast corner of 48th and Highway 2. It's another tiny place, easy to miss but impossible to forget. Thinking about Bullfrog and Smokehouse, I realize that there are probably several similar tiny joints all around town that only the privileged few know about. Sadly, the small size that gives these places their charm is also one of the major reasons so many of them don't last very long. What other "unnoticeables" -- those special, hidden restaurants you hold near and dear -- are hiding around town that the Lincolnite community should know about?

I hate to get Beerorkid started on Mexican Food and the resulting emissions….but Lucy’s Mexican Restaurant is one of my very favorite Mom and Pop hidden gems.  Lucy’s is tucked into the little Mercantile area North of Cornhusker just East of where HWY 77 turns North.  The shops have those green awnings.  They have menus but few people use them.  They have four or five daily specials on the board by the door and everyone orders from the board.

El Chapparro is on 13th and F or so. Opened until 3am on the weekends. I don’t know how well known it is, but it’s by far my favorite mexican food in town.

Will keep it on the DL, me swears.
Sadly I really know of none :(

Lucy’s was good the time I went there, but a bit far away for me.

El Charro was my fav mex place, but it gone now I think.  El Chapparo is quick, cheap, and pretty good.

I understand that Lucy’s has opened a sister restaurant down South.  I think it is next to the Roadhouse across from the prison on South 14th.  Don’t know the name.

How about breakfast joints?  Engine House on Havelock is very good.  Haven’t been there for lunch or dinner in years but hear it is pretty good for those also.

Alladin’s, just south of 48th and Fremont, near the day-old bread place. Haven’t been there recently, but they have great Middle-Eastern food.

Vung Tau at 27th and Y - with or without the Bubble Tea, their food’s fantastic!

Tina’s Cafe has the best breakfast in town if you can get a seat. It’s pretty tiny, in a good way.

I remember a little place in Uni Place… It was on the NW corner of N 48th and St. Paul.  I cannot remember the name, but they served some great food.

speaking of the ville grillllllle.  I visited their new location out on sun valley blvd.  I even thought of mentioning it on this thread.

mmmmm… broasted.

Across the street from them used to be a great old fashioned drug store with lunch counter and soda fountain.  Must have closed after I left town and before I moved back.

Yes, Moses, there was an old fashioned drug store across the street, but it’s long gone. Now the building houses a video rental store. But Michel’s has an old fashioned soda fountain.

It’s great to live in Uni Place - I’m also within walking distance of House of Hunan (strip mall at 48th and Leighton) so I have somewhere to go when I’m hungry for an eggroll and hot mustard sauce.

I love hot mustard and sweet and sour sauce with my eggrolls.  The thing I never see in Nebraska Chinese restaurants is Cha Siu (Chinese or Cantonese BBQ Pork).  On the West Coast it is on the appetizer menu of most Chinese restaurants, even the Sezchuan and Hunan restaurants.  Slices of BBQ pork with a great big dollop of hot mustard will clear those sinus cavities.

Hmmm…if I would combine the great grilled pork at Vung Tau with the wonderful mustard at House of Hunan….sounds like a winner!

Thanks for the topic, I will try the House of Hunan, was always a bit scared but now will go (thanks Diane K).  My wife and I are new to Lincoln from KC (can I still say new, we have been in East Campus for a year now).

Anyway…I like the tortas from Super Taco at 55th and Holdrege.  We sneak into the Isles for pizza at Havelock and we also spend time at the noodle joint on 27th…Pho Nguyen…not sure of the exact address but the soup is the cats pajamas.

Thai House is one of my favorites, near 27th and Y. Sinbad’s north of there on 27th and I-don’t-know-what is good. So is the Golden Wok, also in that same area.

Zhang’s has good Chinese food at Coddington and West A streets.

I’ll also give a shout out to Lee’s Chicken on Coddington and Van Dorn.

I love Tina’s for breakfast and also had a great experience at The Restaurant (Grill Ville’s second location on Sun Valley Boulevard).

Had lunch today at the Red Fox, it was awesome. And I think Merle’s in Emerald has the best double cheeseburger in Lincoln. Probably because of the layers of grease built up on the grill over the years.

Nice foxspit.  Lee’s is nummy in an old school kind of way.

Tina’s is just a few pedal turns from my house, yet I have yet to go there.

Red Fox has some darn good bar food.

Looks like I need to try a burger at Merl’s.  I had fried mushrooms the last time we biked out there.  They have bacon right?

And that reminds me.  Duggans has some darn good bar food.  Maybe a bar food topic would be nice.  wink wink

It is awesome how these food posts are getting so many comments.

Thanks for the tip on Lucy’s Moses. I’ve gone by there several times but never thought to stop by. Will do so in the near future hopefully!

I would like to add China Inn (North 27th) to the list.

Beerorkid: Merle’s swaddles you in bacon the minute you walk in the door. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Good call on Duggan’s, probably the best lunch menu in town.

Two more places in Uni Place—European Deli, about a block north of 48th and St Paul, on the east side. Haven’t been there in a while, but they not only serve sandwiches and soup, but there’s a grocery store in there with unique European offerings.

Haven’t been to Sultana’s (just north of 48th and Leighton, east side, lower part of a building)—looks like an interesting hole-in-the-wall type of joint. I’ll have to stop in and give a report.

I agree that Lucy’s is good. Haven’t been to Red Fox or Duggan’s, but have heard so many good comments, that I’ll have to try them.

T&R’s Garden (part of the Motel at 50-something and Cornhusker) is good too. Big hamburgers with the right amount of grease, and I like their fries and soups.

I haven’t been there since Norm cussed at me for trying to use a debit card, but M&N Sandwich is a pretty unique place at 27th and Randolph.

I stopped in to a ba right by my own house Saturday night and was VERY impressed with the food. ‘The Watering Hole’ at Coddington & A streets.

I had the Jalapeno Cream Cheese Burger, My wife had a patty melt of some variety, and we split some wings.

WOW! Best wings I’ve EVER EVER EVER had. Burger was great. Wife liked her patty melt. Big surprise was the fries - they were very good. Crispy waffle fries. you don’t see that often.

On the way out I dope-slapped myself for living by it for 3 years and never eating there before.

As long as we are keeping this thread alive I feel it necessary to comment on two of the locations listed above.
Thursday I drove out to Merle’s in Emerald.  Excellent service and good food and just exactly what a smalltown locally owned joint should be.  They had four lunch specials on the board and the four of us tried one each.  Not a single complaint from anyone.

Friday I cruised to the Ville Grille and found the same.  Good food, good service and except for falling asleep at my desk because I ate too much, no complaints.

Love to avoid the chains and try the locals.  Thanks for the suggestions. Tomorrow we will try Vung Tau.

Also was reminded while at Ville Grille of Mo Java.  Haven’t been there in a while.  Is it still the best coffee in North Lincoln?

Diane K

Moses - I don’t frequent any other coffee houses, but I’d say that Mo Java’s coffee surely ranks highly. I also enjoy their free music on Friday evenings.

...another reason why I love living in north Lincoln!
