The Rules That Apply

By: Mr. Wilson on July 15, 2011
I'm a little fuzzy on rules associated with liquor around here. Let me see if I've got this straight. If you put other peoples' lives at grave risk, you won't lose your liquor license as long as you're a nice guy who is pretty well respected in the community. If, on the other hand, there are some pictures on a website you operate of boobs exposed in a public place, you cannot get a liquor license. To recap: boobies = bad, drunk driving = good. Let that be a lesson to all you kids out there.

Lincoln rules. Sounds about right to me.

From reading the story about Smooth since it began, it seems that Casady has a serious personal issue with him.

“The chief said he is concerned about Harrington’s involvement in a company that markets pornographic websites.

I worked for a company that specifically marketed to porn websites. I can’t imagine that my involvement with that company would be one of the determining factor on what kind of person I am and if I would follow the rules.

I think Harrington’s attitude towards the powers that be was a much bigger factor than any boobies.

I’m a big Casady fan. One of the biggest. I disagree with him on many issues but I’d still vote, campaign, and fundraise for him for just about any office because I like how the guy operates.

But when it comes to the Harringtons, Tom Casady behaves like a doofus.

Every man has his weakness. Tom Casady’s weakness, apparently, is a naked Melissa Harrington. He really needs to get over it.

That he’s a priest in the state religion (m:football, f:basketball) probably helped too.

Again, for the record, I am pro-boobies.

Some people can learn from mistakes and some people don’t. Or refuse to because they have money and think they are above people that they need to work with to obtain their business goals. Plus I work at an establishment near this “club” and they have had nothing but trouble at 2am. No “young professionals” were in sight.

Now all the young professionals are going to flee to Denver, Kansas City, Omaha, and Chicago. Lincoln’s going to be Topeka in no time.

agree on this.  When you are trying to work on getting people behind your project you don’t go out there and slander them.  Why in the world would one expect to get something from someone after calling them names, acting like your better than all them, etc.

Harrington has had issues with alcohol and minors in the past.  That was main reason.  also note that due to public making it a total pain…the Viper Room is no longer going to spend money to redo the space at 12th & O.

just curious

I never understood the whole “young professional” thing. I’ve spent time around “young professionals” - about half of them women. I’ve never heard them say, “Hey, let’s go hang out at the topless bar this weekend.” Nor have I ever heard a group of “young professionals” plan where they are going to live, work or vacation based upon the number of topless bars nearby. When was the last time you heard a engineer, lawyer, doctor, architect, nuclear physicist, etc. say they are moving away from Lincoln so they can be closer to more topless bars?

That’s a bit of a straw man. Think in broader terms. There are two factors at play here. The first is the overall “nightlife culture”. Does the community offer a variety of options for “young professionals” who want a night on the town? The more options and the broader the range of opportunities, the healthier the nightlife culture is presumed to be. Like it or not, nudie bars are part of the spectrum.

The second factor is the community’s response to the nightlife. A community with a Dirty Dancing attitude toward nightclubs and such is undesirable, as is one with a Wild West approach. Something in the middle—fun and free but not anarchic—is considered best for “young professionals”. Clearly Lincoln is taking the conservative approach here.

Will this particular situation have any effect on “young professionals” and their likelihood of coming to or staying in Lincoln? Probably not. Again, it’s not just about this one case. People tend to look at larger patterns when making decisions.

Smooth was not the topless bar. That was The Viper Room and not owned by Shane Harrington.

The other commenter called it a topless bar as well.

Right, but since it’s my blog so I should probably catch these things. I blame my editor.
