The Replacements

By: Mr. Wilson on February 21, 2007
Now that Crawdaddy's and Doughboyz are both dead and gone, I'm pretty darn bummed. What will I do without a periodic big ass burrito or DBQ pizza? The Missus and I need to find replacement restaurants to fill the void in our dining repertoire. I think Paul's BBQ could make a nice partial replacement. It's a very "homey" sort of restaurant, with a nice neighborhood feel. But it can't carry the load all on its own. We need at least one other restaurant -- perhaps a pizza joint, or a place that can duplicate Crawdaddy's friendly/surly waitress experience. What would you suggest?

I’m sorry to hear that about both restaurants.  The only place I can think of to get the kind of abuse Crawdaddy’s doled out is M&N Sandwich.

Norm dished out a heaping helping of smack-down the last time I was there so I don’t know how willing I am to go back there.  As much as I love the sandwiches, he was out of line.

I recently moved back to Lincoln after being gone for 8 years.  The chain restaurant plague has infected this town.  I am sorry that most new restaurants that seem to be thriving are not local.  My wife and I are still looking for excellent Chinese.  The best that was here when we left is gone.

Moses,

Try Zhang’s on Coddington and West A streets.  Locally owned and good food at a good price.

Also,  if you are ever in Portland and looking for the surly waitress experience you must try Stepping Stone for breakfast.  Their T-shirts bear the restaurant logo:“You Eat Here Because We Let You”

I have to second the motion on Zhang’s.  They have, hands down, the best crab rangoon I have ever eaten.  The other standards are good as well, including the hunan shrimp (my personal fave).

Moses - China Inn is good (North 27th). Usually. I think it depends on the chef that day. They do have a really tasty cold seaweed appetizer.

Mr. T,
Is that the one in the Super Saver strip mall just north of Cornhusker?  Someone else told me they were good.  I haven’t tried it yet.  I usually judge a place by their Hot and Sour soup.  If they screw that up they can’t be trusted with anything more complicated.  Sort of like trying Spaghetti Marinara the first time you go to an Italian place.

Moses - Yes, that is the one. Its really not bad at all, and they have a few cool items on the menu. Give it a try and let us know what you think.
