The Cursed Corner is About to Awaken

By: Mr. Wilson on August 16, 2007
foxspit dropped me a note to say that a new restaurant is on the way at 8th and Q, in the former Brazen Head / Eighth Street Iron Works / etcetera location. Hopefully the new restaurant fares better. Anybody have any info about the restaurant? Are there any signs up? I haven't had a chance to get to the Haymarket lately, and I probably won't until next week when I try Bread & Cup.

I think the banner said something about Magnolias or something like that. No details. The women in Licorice International had some promotional postcards for the restaurant laying out but they didn’t know anything either.

Oh now you’ve gone and done it. Bork is going to spend the rest of the day drooling and babbling about bacon.

...which is pretty much his usual routine. 😊

Speaking of corners of activity—anyone know what’s going in at S. 14th & Old Cheney? Monday, the erosion fences went up around the site. Tuesday, the survey stakes were up and they started moving earth directly west of Culver’s.

Seems like a good, high-visibility spot for some kind of retail/restaurant/bar. I selfishly hope it’s something cool and/or useful, as I live just down the road.

I really hope they have bacon dishes 😉  I ran my bacon reserves dry last week.  Was a little nervous till I got more.

Was a fan of the iron works.  knew the owners and the food was very decent.  A steak with a pepercorn sauce and fries and my picky wife loving it made me like them.  Would of been better with a little bacon though.

Speaking of beggin strips

I didn’t see anything in the building permits for 14th and Old Cheney but I ran across a permit for renovations to perform “alterations for a restaurant” at the old art supply business at 1028 O St. (near Kuhl’s Restaurant).

No other details.

In other Haymarket news, a “sneaker boutique” will open soon in the Hide and Fur Building.

BORK - I just had an idea. You should start your own eating establishment called “PIG”. You could serve bacon, sausage, chops and other tasty goodness.

Mmmmm-mmmmmm.

I can’t wait until you open! I’ll be there!

Funny you should mention that.  My dream is to have a brewery with a pub on the side.  Deep fried Freddy’s.  Pretty much anything fried.

But it is kind of like the OSO or subway kind of make it your self kind of thing.  You choose what you want fried, then different breadings, batters, and then the oil you want it cooked in.  The bravest can have theirs fried in bacon grease (low smoke point might be an issue).  And of course dipping sauces.
Every meal / order will be garnished with a bacon spiral.

Bacon is not only the most delicious, nutritious, rewarding, flavorful, and most awesomest food product evar, it can be a tasty garnish as well.  Parsley your days are numbered.

OK - good enough. I’ll be THERE on opening day instead!

About Magnolia - the woman opening it was the head of dining services at Union College and is now following her dream to have her own restaurant.

I heard that the food will be steak/seafood standards plus (her specialty) gourmet vegetarian.
