So There’s That Thing Going On Today

By: Mr. Wilson on May 11, 2010
So there's this little election today. You may have heard about it. I encourage you to vote. Don't know your polling place? You can use this handy tool to figure it out. In my case my polling place had moved and I didn't know it. Good thing I looked. I'm going to the polls to vote on two issues. The first is the arena. I'm voting yes. I hope you decide to vote yes, too. Don't worry, though; I'll still love you if you vote no. Whatever your vote, I hope it's an educated vote. Ignorant voters suck. I'm also going to vote yes on Amendment 1. Again, I hope you vote yes as well. Many states already have laws in place similar to Amendment 1. It's a tried and tested way to help nonprofits lower the cost of financing construction projects. Total cost to you: $0.00. And remember, choosing not to vote is an action in itself. If you choose that option, I hope you choose it for the right reasons.

What’s this about an election today?

I kid. I’ve become very popular. I got calls from Kay Orr and Eric Crouch on Sunday alone. Wasn’t that considerate of them?

This post was well stated, Mr. W. I voted today. I encourage you all to vote. If you live and are registered here and don’t exercise your right to vote, then I don’t want to hear you complain about the outcome.

I would encourage folks to vote for the arena as well. Is it a perfect point in time? Maybe not. Is the site absolutely perfect? Maybe not. However, I believe the positives far outweigh any negatives, and that it’s the right thing for the city and a way to move Lincoln forward for decades to come.

I was going to suggest a prediction thread. I’m thinking the arena vote will pass, and I think it will pass fairly handily. It wouldn’t shock me to see it hit 55-57% in favor. Any other guesses out there?

My other prediction is that Tony Fulton will win the primary for Treasurer. It seems to be the only contested race. I’m hoping this will put an end to seeing Don Stenberg’s name on a state ballot. Thanks for your years of service, but I think it’s time to move on, sir.

Anyone else care to weigh in with predictions?

I wish I had your optimism Fletch, but I’d predict 50.9 - 49.1 without a clue which way wins.

What time do the polls close?  I can’t seem to find that anywhere (full disclosure: haven’t looked real hard, either)

The polls are open until 8:00 pm (Voter Guide [PDF]).

Thanks!  I just saw that on the sample ballot and was headed back to update this.

Seriously?  I expect the arena to pass with over 60%.  With all the pro-arena propaganda coming from all reaches of the universe for the last two years, those who organized the support should be embarrassed if it’s anything less than that.

I think it will also be very close, but I think the arena won’t pass. If not, there will be blood on the walls.

Do cmapaign managers/employees ever check their mailing lists?

I haven’t been a resident of the state for almost a year now, but yet got some election mailings from Nebraska here in Duluth, MN. Are candidates that desperate this year?

I hope you guys are right about the arena margin. I think if it passes it will be very close. Get out and vote comrades.

I concur with Mr. T.

Everything I’m hearing suggests it’ll be a very close margin.  I’ve heard a little bit of internal polling, and from what I’ve gathered (combined with my own unscientific filter), I’d predict a “Yes” by something like 53-47.

If anyone’s bored, I’ll be doing live coverage of the election starting at 8 p.m. on KLIN.

You’re on tonight at 8, then you have to turn around and be on tomorrow morning? Yeesh. You may as well just take a sleeping bag to work.

If Tony Fulton wins he might regret his support of the TEA party folks who will vote to eliminate the State Treasurer office in November.  I am sure his buddy Dave will just appoint him to another office like before though.

Election results will start to show up around 8 PM I believe.

Jack - keep up the great work. I think if this things passes (and I believe it will), you are one of the reasons. Your work on exploring and blowing up the myths and trying to present FACTS (how odd) during this process have been great. My hat is off to you!

I found it quite amusing that the only real contested race is for a job that could be going away. That just struck me as funny.

BorK, I’ve been spending more time on your blog - I love it. The Where’s Perry had me smiling. Nicely done!

Agreed. I don’t generally listen to KLIN because of the syndicated shows, but the local coverage has been evenhanded and outstanding.

Fulton has his eyes on the Governor’s seat. Treasurer is just a step in that direction. He’s a bright and well-meaning young guy and I hope he beats Stenberg.

Jack, you were pretty close in your prediction! The final results were 56% to 44% in favor.

I’m glad the citizens of Lincoln voted to invest in the city’s future. I am looking forward to watching our progress!

I didn’t hear Jack’s prediction. When I made mine this morning (scroll up), I really wanted to suggest 57-43. As I typed it, that seemed too aggressive, so I hedged by 2 points. Indeed, I did overshoot by .62% if you take my 57% number. Congrats to the good folks of Lincoln. Good thing 5 Guys is opening tomorrow, or there’d simply be nothing left to talk about.

Fletch, your range was right on the money!

Sadly, I way underestimated the name recognition of Don Stenberg. That was way off.
