Premium on Gas

By: Mr. Wilson on April 23, 2007
Why is there a $0.15 premium on gasoline on the south side of town compared to the north? Is there some hidden tax on south-siders that I'm not aware of?

I live in southeast Lincoln and work downtown.  I usually make the very quick drive over to West ‘O’ to get gas at either the U-Stop or the Kwik Shop.

When the gas there is about .07 or .14 (as it is now) a gallon cheaper than the station closest to my house, I really can justify the five extra minutes and two-three extra miles.

When we moved to southeast Lincoln from West ‘O’, I was really shocked by the price difference.

See, that’s why no one wants to check out the ‘burbs. Gas is out of whack - my guesses are two-fold. One, the land on which a station is built seems to cost more in SE Lincoln. And two, at least in some places due to covenants, they build slightly fancier buildings - more brick and less cinder block, etc. If a gas station owner knows he needs to have a profit of x%, and it costs more to build it, I think we pay for it in gas. Go to the U-Stop at 70th and Pioneers or 27th and Pine Lake, and they will be the same price. Go to 84th and Cornhusker, and pay less. Those are my theories. I prefer to think these things over the idea that I am just being screwed for living in SE Lincoln.

By the way, it appears that the new Shell station just southeast of 84th and Old Cheney has opened or is going to open any day. It will be nice to have it here, but who knows how much we’ll pay there. LOL

Maybe they think those down south can afford to pay more.
Omaha was $.14 cheaper this weekend than Lincoln.

Good thing I plan to stay in the “ghetto.”
