NAMR!

Good news for those of you who can't stand the fact that every new restaurant opening in town seems to be some sort of Mexican restaurant. According to Matt Olberding, a Colorado-based burger joint called SmashBurger -- not another Mexican restaurant! -- is coming to town. And not just one location, either; ten locations are planned across Lincoln and Omaha, which probably means we're looking at 3 or 4 locations in the Star City. By the looks of the menu it's a fairly standard contemporary burger joint: beef or chicken "burger", a few toppings, some sides, and a couple hot dogs thrown in for good measure. I'm generally not a burger guy so I'm not one to get excited over the menu, but I'll certainly give the place a try once it opens. I can't eat tortas and burritos for every meal, after all. Have any of you been to one of SmashBurger's existing locations?

We saw this scroll across the bottom of the news last night at 10pm, but didn’t catch the name.  Hopefully they will not be another Taco Bueno where they floow Lincoln and then bail.

I thought the exact same thing!

I will be shocked - SHOCKED - if we ever see 10 units sprinkled around Lincoln and Omaha.

Fazoli’s said the same thing. There’s still just one here, and maybe 2-3 in Omaha. Raising Cane’s has said the same thing, and although it’s early, there is no movement yet on a second location.

Remember Taco Del Mar? They said the same thing. Taco Beuno? We saw how that went.

With all that said, I like new places and I like burgers so I will give it a try if it’s anywhere nearby. I wish them the best!

They still only have one.  Unless there is something amazingly different about these places, don’t expect great success.

Pricey burgers are going to be a tough sell.

I’ve seen the concept work though. In downtown Columbia, Mo., there is a bar/pool hall called Booche’s that sells cheap burgers. They don’t call them smashburgers, but they take a ball of hamburger and smash it down on the grill to make a flat patty. The burgers are great and cheap.

It’s the “cheap” part that’s missing from the Smashburger equation. Not that they are extravagantly expensive, but dropping $10 for a burger meal is enough to make me think twice about going.

I was so excited for a second! When I saw “Colorado-based burger joint” my heart fluttered as I hoped the sentence ended “Good Times Burgers & Frozen Custard”.

But alas… it is not to be.

FYI - should my wife and I ever win Powerball, our first order of business would be to open a Good Times and a Tokyo Joe’s in Lincoln. So - cross your fingers for us.

I think Backyard Burger is a fair price point - only slightly higher than BK or McD, but a better burger for sure.

How about we quit messing around and just open an In & Out Burger here?

Taco Bueno fleeing Lincoln was a bad thing?

I have been saying for YEARS now that a White Castle would be a huge hit in Lincoln. I just know it.

If we’re getting another burger joint, it’d sure be nice to have a 24 hour Steak N Shake here…

Agreed! Simple burger and fries joint that is priced right with good quality food. It would be a gold mine in the right location.
