LJS Mini-Rant

By: Mr. Wilson on September 9, 2008
The LJS revamped their weather page (last page of Section B) a couple days ago. Among other changes, ol' Ken Siemek got the boot. Sorry Ken. One thing about the weather page drives me nuts. Why oh why do I have to work so hard to find today's high temperature? I can quickly find out the temperatures at 7:00am, noon, and 7:00pm. But the high temperature is buried in a map elsewhere on the page. Grr.

How come we can only see yesterday’s rainfall for an 18 hour period? (Midnight to 6:00 pm, I think, I don’t have the LJS in front of me). I know you can’t go ‘til midnight, what with printing times, etc. Why not then go 6:00 pm to 6:00 pm, for 24-hour rainfall totals?

18 hours seems arbitrary.

I think it looks okay overall, but too many capital letters. Don’t these people have to study fonts and kerning and readability when they get into the business?

I was eternally greatful to not have Ken Siemek looking at me every day.

Oh.  People still read the print version?

Go to http://www.weather.com. That should fix any problems you’re having with the local weather forecasts. 😉

Heh, heh! Maybe not for long if they can’t get through the weather map.

I said the same thing as Mr. Wilson the first time I saw it. How hard is it to put the dang high temp in the forecast? Seems like an obvious thing to me.

The high and low for the day are also in the top corner of the front page. Maybe they figured it couldn’t get any easier to find than that.

You might think so, but it’s amazing how the early a.m. brain thinks.
