Live Blogging - Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

By: Mr. Wilson on January 8, 2007
I'll be live blogging throughout tonight's broadcast of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, which features Lincoln's very own Fullerton-Machacek family. Which other Lincolnites will we see? Where will the EM:HE crew go around town? Let's find out together! Catch up: [7:00] It's a love story tonight, not a tragedy as is usual for EM:HE. I'm surprised they didn't opt to show this one closer to Valentine's Day. [7:06] I wonder what the other tenants in the apartment thought during all this... [7:09] The neighborhood looks good. [7:12] Football in the street in Cornhusker country. Whodathunkit? [7:13] Huh, I thought the proposal came in Paris. Still cool, though. [7:15] Anybody want to guess what their first words were when the door of the limo closed? I'm thinking "Holy crap!" [7:19] Yeeha! Go band! [7:20] The crowd of people dwarfs that little house. I think they could just push it over if they wanted to. [7:22] I don't care how excited you are to get a new house, that has to be weird seeing your house get torn down in a matter of seconds. [7:27] Morning of day three? That was fast. [7:28] A race track in the wall? Sweeeeet. [7:29] Go Stars! Taking shots as a hockey keeper would be a ton of fun. [7:31] Am I the only one whose inner monologue switches to a bad French accent every time they show a scene in Paris? [7:32] Another commercial? What the hell? [7:34] Has anybody used Blockbuster Total Access? I would be tempted if I actually had time to watch movies. [7:35] 4,200 square foot? Daaaaamn. [7:38] No disasters during construction, so they're already moving in furniture. That was too easy. [7:39] Wedding day in Paris, ceremony on the river...not bad. I never would have been able to get married in front of a national television audience. It was hard enough not screwing up my lines in front of my family and friends. [7:42] Next up is the reveal. Were you there in person? [7:46] Trains and the wind turbines. They really haven't showed much of Lincoln, have they? [7:48] It's pertty. Doesn't really fit into the neighborhood, but it's pertty. [7:49] Awwww, he carried her over the threashhold. [7:51] Gotta say, the rooms are pretty neat. It's hard to say which is my favorite since they didn't show any of them for very long. Speaking of which, is it just me, or is this show quickly approaching the 50% show/50% commercial mark? [7:54] That was by far the most effective Kleenex commercial I've ever seen. Much better than the standard "Our flimsy pieces of paper catch more snot than their flimsy pieces of paper". [7:56] The master bedroom theme is nice, with the "merging family trees" metaphor. Plus, I'm a sucker for b/w photography. [7:58] Hartman Homes paid off the family's mortgage. Heck of a wedding present. [7:59] Anybody for a Lincolnite bbq in the backyard? Now to get ourselves invited... Well, that's it. I have to say it wasn't the most exciting EM:HE I've ever watched. Lately the episodes seem to really follow a predictable pattern, and like I mentioned above, the ratio of show to commercial is rapidly decreasing. From the Lincoln perspective, there isn't much to say. There were a couple scenery shots, but it was pretty much impossible for an outsider to get any impression at all of the city. Oh well, a local family got a beautiful new home. That's good enough for me. Congratulations again to the family.

[7:21] I see Ty and company must have decided to partake in a great midwest-plains tradition: meth.

Hi Mr. T,

For the curry chicken, there is no real recipe because I used a ready-made paste, so it’s like cake-mix, you just follow the instructions on the packaging and you have yourself a truly Malaysian curry.  But please stay tuned…I am going to start selling that product so I will let you know.

IPerhaps I can also do a post about cooking curry chicken from scratch.

I’d love to find an easy recipe for curry chicken too!  Please post!

For me, it did seem to help that the kids wanted to all be together so much… But as I said to my viewing companion, “But do you think the promise of a big, new house would be enough for them to fake it?”  Who knows?  That said, I felt like they spent more time “selling” the story to the viewing audience.

[7:13] Huh, I thought the proposal came in Paris. Still cool, though.

I was aware that he proposed before they left, and that the rumor was they’d get married while away… But cannot remember how I knew.

We found ourselves saying things like, “Don’t they both have jobs?  Where does all that money go?  There must be some major debt or something.  Gosh, the kids sure seem nicely dressed.”

Regardless, they took the time to apply, and it must have been the best story the show had to work with.  It was neat to see how happy they were; and we can always use reminders to simply “do nice things for those around us.”  Last week, it was shoveling walkways and helping people brush snow of their cars… You wouldn’t believe the smiles such simple actions can bring.

What a joke!  These people deserve a nice new, free, fabulous home just as much as the next middle class couple does.  I was disappointed that they chose to do a love story as opposed to a tragedy.  What an unfair advantage as I’m sure there are many more interesting love stories than theirs. Not to mention, I don’t think ABC even mentioned they were looking for a love story.  Imagine all the well-deserving people that poured their hearts out with tragedies, only to find the recipients were working, middle-class people who merely didn’t take the step to unite yet.  Not that they truly couldn’t, just that they didn’t for whatever reasons.  My guess would be tax purposes or maybe they really don’t love each other as much as they over-dramatically professed.  When they stated the father spends time going back and forth between the two current residences, trying to be a father to all the children, my first thought was, “that’s what they call going to your girlfriends to get a piece, then go back home”?  HMMMMMM.  I also heard that some of the children (young adults really) didn’t live at home during the application and only moved back in to make it look like one big happy, separated family.

I’m very disappointed.  Not jealous as some might conclude, just sickened that a pharmacist and a working man recieved this gift over many other people that clearly deserve it more! He could have very well sold his house in disrepair, went to the justice of the peace (as this is not the first marriage for either one), combined incomes and purchased a larger, nicer house together.  I’ve dealt with her where she works as a pharmacist and she was the biggest biatch there and acted as if the customers were bothering her.  I don’t see this as someone deserving of what she received.  I predict they’ll be divorced within a year because the only reason they really got married was because they had to to receive this house.  Do you really think ABC would give a house to an unmarried couple?  Too much uncertainty.  At least if they marry them off, it’s a lot harder to sell the house.

Sorry for being so blunt, but it’s the truth.

Foxspit - I would love to FIND a place in town that had decent Malay-style chicken curry. The closest place I know of is in St. Paul. Anyway I recommend Rasa Malaysia generally for recipes and photos.

Another response to the Lincoln, NE. Extreme Home Makeover. I didn’t give much thought about the Machacek/Fullerton families being selected for an Extreme Home Makeover until I read a LJS Article, December 23, 2006 about a Lincoln woman who had submitted a tape to EHM to help her construct a handicapped accessible home for her disabled son. A home that would accommodate up to 4 disabled people. In an effort to raise money for the project, the woman baked and sold 2,000 pies, and raised $7,000.00. She implemented and executed other fund raising events, and raised over $160,000. I guess ABC/EHM doesn’t share my opinion on helping those who help themselves. I didn’t care for the “Love Story” that they chose. I don’t know how many tapes were submitted for an Extreme Home Makeover in Lincoln, but I can’t help think that there was at least ONE family that was more deserving. The Machacek/Fullerton families are no more deserving of an EHM than you or I. I did not submit my tape for the fact that my story is boring, and I wouldn’t be considered. No kids at home, no one sick or disabled, yet I am struggling just to get by, and yes, my home could use a makeover. I recently heard that a couple of the kids received scholarships for their educations. And I’m sure the perks just keep coming. I also read on-line that ABC has found tax loopholes for their Extreme Home Makeovers. It is my understanding that EHM recipients are exempt of property/real estate taxes.
Now that’s not quite fair.

jeno, you’re thinking of Patty Wilson and her efforts to build the Charlie M. Wilson Replacement Care Home (see the latest article). It’s hard to disagree that the Home would have made a good project for EM:HE.

It is my understanding that EHM recipients are exempt of property/real estate taxes.

I doubt that. Hartland Homes paid off the (old) house’s mortgage, but I don’t see how the home could be exempt from taxation.
