Good list, beerorkid. I agree about Avant Card. (Which reminds me, I don’t think I ever mentioned what they did for me earlier this year. I’ll post on that over lunch.)

In the same spirit as Monkey Wrench, I’ll add Lincoln Running Company. Ann Ringlein rocks, her staff is knowledgeable, and they support all sorts of local running events.

Agree with Avant Card!

I like Westlake Ace in Van Dorn Plaza.  Everything you need and always something to look at.  Helpful employees too.

Ditto:
DIT Computers
Licorice Int’l.

I also like the Train Cellar in UniPlace.

I’ll also give my props to the Train Cellar.  Talk about an old-school (in a good way) shop in it for the love of the hobby.  Here are my favorite local retailers, in not specific order:
* Kent’s Mens Shoes—Kent knows more about shoes than anyone, and I’ve never been unhappy with a purchase there.

* Lincoln Running Company—I wish their prices would be reduced from MSRP, but if I need something in a pinch, I go there.  I also try to get shoes there when it’s time.

The Cookie Company—Not exclusively local, and I don’t eat sweets much anymore, but their OD and sugar cookies are the best cookies I’ve ever had.

Yikes.  Trying to think of local retailers has got me depressed now, because I just realized how few places there are anymore that are truly local.

cookie cookie cookie

oatmeal scotchies for me.

hey it is localy owned by good peeps who work hard to sell cookies for a buck.

Also like to give a shout out to footloose and fancy.  i am a birk wearer for life.

Chains aint got nuttin on our bizness’s around here.  i love being in walmart drunk at 4 AM, but I support local a bunch.  It is all about the niche.

Bakers Hardware - sometimes they’re gruff, but they always know what they are talking about so I forgive them.

Jakes - yeah. I wish they could still sell single cigarettes. I loved that! I don’t smoke much, but sometimes I really want one and don’t want to buy a pack.

Oriental market (by Thai House) and O Asian Garden - I like the oriental market better (it’s quite a bit cheaper) but O Asian garden has some nice items not at the other - and a nice selection of tea.

Golden Wok - the lady there always remembers me (and everyone else), even if I have not been in for a long time. She even notices when I cut my hair!

Gauntlet Games - Great game shop, whether you’re a gaming nerd or not. They have a great selection of unusual board games, table top games, and role playing games.

I’m mad DIT and Midwest Seafood moved to the other end of town. Damn you people, taking all our good places to shop away! I never make it over there- there’s really no quick way to go. 😛

Bakers does rule.  It is right by my house and they get most of my bizness.

Dit moved?  doh.  been a while since I have been there.  but when you need a 80mm fan for $3 or a piece of some sort of cable it is perfect.  I wub newegg for the real stuff.

Midwest seafood rules.  And if you saw the article it does make sense, still kinda a bummer.

You kinda have to give it up to some of the newage/hippy stores.  you can get some good stuffis there as well.

Homer’s, spindle, ruby begoinias, rialto, kirk’s brew, cycle works/moose’s tooth, sheeeet I could go on and on.  We are lucky to live in this fine city.
